Which '72?

I am interested in getting an 1872 OT in 44 Colt w/Army grip.  All are made by Uberti and they are sold by/imported by Uberti, Cimarron and Taylor's, is that correct?   Do you all have any preference?  Any differences?  What modifications/upgrades are suggested.

but in my experiance Taylor's has been more helpful and responsive to customer service.
That said, Mine (a Cimarron) worked just fine right out of the box, however,  I decided to send mine to Longhunter, it got an action job with new Lee Springs.... I'm not the lease bit sorry I did.... best $125 I ever spent ...buttery smooth and nary a hiccup ever.
Guns with date codes in the 05 ,06 run had some issues with Firing pin pearcing.... you can get a replacement from The Smith Shop ( Happy Trails ) ...

my Open Top, year 1999, had a defect that a lot of the early Open Tops exhibited, namely the pin had a tendency to mushroom after awhile because of being too soft a temper. I had it replaced after it caused intermittent soft strikes on primers.
Sounds like they over compensated and hardened the pins too much in later production.

I just picked up my '72 in 44 Colt today and it is a Cimarron.  It is finished extremely well and the trigger is not bad out of the box.  It is not as crisp as I would like, but the pull is not heavy at all.  I would not want to shoot it at bulls eye targets, but at steel, it should be just fine. 

I have a Henry in 44 Russian and that is what I will be shooting in my Open Top!   The Henry will hold 16 of the 44 Russian cartridges!!          They makes me REAL HAPPY!!

you are correct...some early guns exibited your issue....I assumed, prehaps wrongly , Wild Willi was looking to buy new.
The likelyhood of a 05 or 06 date coded model still being in a gunshops case somewhere was possible.
In either case the Smith Shop replacement pin is the trick.
Course a few strokes with a diamond file will solve the pearcing priners on later 05-06 date code guns.
My 05 did not have an issue, but I did the Smith Shop FP change anyway.
I've since sold my OT in favor of my T-1 Richards & Richards & Mason.

Sometimes wish I had'n t sold it, But it was out of caliber to everything else when I sold my Spencer. 
Except for my 1860 w/ R&D Drop-in conversion, I use 45 Sch. in it sometimes.
The new owner has yet to fire it    I just may trade him back one day.

Just a sidenote here guys. Check your 44 Colts from Cimarron. Though marked 44 COLT, many are chambered now in 44 Special. Both of my 1872 Army Grips were, despite both the barrels and the boxes being marked 44 Colt. That's great by me, as I shoot 44 Special.

Just purchased a "72" Uberti open top in 38spl, as soon as I got it to the range I found it to be piercing every primer. The firing pin was REALLY long AND was flat on the tip with basically very sharp edges on the periphery of the flat. Not sure of the date code and not sure how to find manufacture date but I did reduce the length and round the edges. Seems fine now.

What is the "Smith Shop" firing pin?

Also is "LongHunter" the best action working smithy outfit out there?

The Smith Shop firing pin is hardened and worth every penny. I had to replace the factory pins on my opentops after about 6 months. You can order them from  http://thesmithshop.com/openfire.html

I have not used Long Hunter, I bought my main match open tops from Evil Roy with action jobs already done by Griner Gunworks. I bought my spare from the Ottway Smith and it has a wonderful action.  However, my brother bought new vaqueros with action jobs from Long Hunter and they are great!

  I have two '72 open tops purchased separately. The first a regular Uberti, worked fine and still does many years later. The second is a Cimarron, and has never been right. Arbor was gaulded and I have been working on it a long time. I am no gunsmith. So...beware. I have other opentops, no problems.

 Except for crappy firing pins (which appear to be the standard), the 38s seem to hold up pretty well. What caliber is your "bad' one?

Someone on the wire mentioned that all the Uberti made 72 barrels are now marked 44Colt, even if they are chambered in 44 Special or 44 Russian.  I can't confirm, because my 44 Special is old enough to be marked 44 Special.  Other barrels I have, ( I bought different lengths) ordered as "44" are marked 44 Colt.
