Bill - glad to hear your back in business.  I too have tried grease cookies to augment the modest lube carrying capacity of these small bullets - with the same result.  They go all over the place.  My cookies were pretty soft, I may need to try a harder beeswax based cookie ???

Do you happen to have Croft Barker's "50-70 Shooter's Handbook"?  While it is obviously written for the 50-70, many of his lessons learned and tips apply to other .50 cal rounds.  One of them has to do with wads sticking to the bullet base.  He says that unlike the .45, .44 and .40s, card wads have a habit if sticking to the base of .50 bullets. Something to do with the larger surface area of the base.  To solve this he compresses his powder with a card (or veggy) wad as usual.  Then adds 2 newspaper wads that are not compressed, then the bullet.  The newspaper wads prevent the heavy card wad from sticking.  Not sure if the newspaper wad sticks or not, but if it does, its so light that it makes little difference.  I have been doing this as regular practice in my .50-95.  Might be worth trying.

My grease cookies were made of 50:50 beeswax and Crisco.  I seated a veggie wad first, using it to compress the powder.  Next came the grease cookie, another veggie wad and then the bullet - all 3 being seated w/finger pressure.  I have not tried newspaper but have had some success using waxed paper, but I haven't tried it with a 50 caliber slug.

I'm finally back to the '76 project.  My excuse for the hiatus - I been sick.  I have installed a Marbles 'long bulls eye' rear sight.  Part no. 006951.  It fits in the rear sight dove tail on the barrel.  Better than the original sight, but still not great.  Groups have improved, 4" at 100 yards.
