An unabashed glowing report on the Mav Dutchman bullet

I finally got to shoot a match with my Mav Dutchman bullets.  Folks, I'm impressed, and I'm hard to impress.  You see, I am very skeptical.  Have you ever heard a salesman tell his product is not the best thing on earth?  I don't believe salesmen, that's what they do for a living.  But this bullet lives up to its claim.
I shot approx 100 rounds through my rifle at Comin' At Cha, finishing on Saturday.  Due to being bowed up like a Halloween cat the next 5 days, I couldn't clean my rifle 'till tonight.  I looked down the barrel and thought, Oh boy, a couple of hours here.  I ran a Murphy's Soap, alcohol and H2O2 wet patch and it was barely dirty.  Another patch and it was even less dirty.  A squirt of the cleaner followed by a brush, and a dry patch.  The dry patch was clean.  A squirt of Ballistol on the next patch and I was done.

It sure is good to find a product that lives up to its claims.

I think now if Dick Dastardly said he could walk on water, I'd most likely believe him. ;D

Howdy Pulp, and thanks for the flowers.

Walkin' on water is easy when you know where the rocks are.  Designing a bullet that does what you experienced is harder.  We have to thank ol' Mav Dutchman himself for this one.  He's "hard by the side of the road" down in Calhoun, LA.  I bought my 1st Mav Dutchman mold in person from his hands.

The Big Lube® bullet designers, more or less simultaneously, independently and quite unknown to each other, all came up with the same solution to keeping black powder guns running without need to clean between stages to maintain accuracy or function.  When this kind of phenomenon happens, it's usually not just chance.  They KNEW what they wanted and figured out how to do it.  The fact that they all came up with the SAME solution should indicate that it's a good and true one.  I simply gathered up their work and put it under the trademark umbrella of "Big Lube™".  We did that to keep the pretenders off.

So, enjoy the fine work of Mav Dutchman and keep shootin' the One True Powder.  Your smile is contagious. :)

I gotta add to the accolades.  Last week I shot a match with MD's stuffed-to-burstin' over Swiss 3f.  It was most gratifying.  Never a problem through the match, last round as accurate and slick as the first.  At home, a couple of days later, went to clean the '73 and found the carrier block as clean as before the match and a few passes through the barrel with some cleaner and ballistol and that was that.  :D

I'm saving my pennies for the MD mould.  It's a lifelong keeper.  Many thanks to MD hisself, DD, and the entrepeneurs, tinkerers and engineers who make this sport so much fun. Huzzah!!! ;D ;D ;D

I bought one of these molds a couple of weeks ago. I've cast a couple hundred bullets trying to get the mold seasoned a little. About 10-15% of the bullets had some issues but I'm thinking they will get better as I fine tune things. I wasn't sure when I was going to get to load and shoot some. I recently lucked into a bargain of a deal on a Dillon 650 with the complete setups for 7 calibers from tool stand through powder measures. The press was bought in 1994, unpacked, and never used. So it was a little stiff with some minor rust. I sent it back to Dillon today to get refurbished. I'll setup my LCT this weekend and load a few rounds to get a feel for BP loading and go shoot them. If things go well I'll be able to load a couple hundred to get me through the winter. When the 650 gets back I can stock up on .38, .45 acp, 9mm, and enough .44 mag to last the whole year.

Watching Pulp shoot the last day at Comin At Cha was an experience.  Rarely do you see a cowboy shooting a pair of Walkers as his main match guns.

KUDOs Pulp!

I also ran 120 rounds of Mav Dutchman at CAC(shot a couple of side matches). Gave the 44-40 a squirt of moosemilk, two passes of the boresnake and done. Sprayed a little Ballistol down the barrel 'cause it'll be a couple of weeks before she comes out again.

Noz, actually it was only one Walker.  The other gun was a '51 Navy.  I only have one holster big enough to hold a Walker, but that's soon to change I hope.

Howdy Cuts,

Your ingenious reemployment of the Maxi Ball for Cowboy Action shooting had to be a 1st.  I stand corrected in my recollection of Big Lube® history.  That it worked is no wonder.  That it was adapted, modified and morphed so successfully owes much to the valid original concept.  It's interesting that a successful muzzle loading projectile could be employed to satisfy the thirsty demands of high volume Cowboy shooting with virtually no modification.

My hat's off to you sir.

Now I must also bring attention to the considerable engineering efforts of the late great El Paso Pete.  He brought us a projectile that was designed to emulate round ball performance with none of the lube deficit inherent to a lead sphere.  His great bullet ranks with the best of the Big Lube® designs.  And, now the circle is complete.  He designed a SASS main match C&B bullet that performs extremely well in muzzle loading rifles.  What goes around comes around.

:D :D Yeah, but the reality is that my discovery was simply fortuitous...not a real effort on my part. I just couldn't find a mold in my collection that I had for years, and in a moment of genius (ok, really a moment of desperation) I thought of trying the maxi ball load just so I could start shooting my precious .45s, that I had recently acquired. When PRS read about my discovery in The Chronical he tried it and found it worked for him too. But, true to his nature, he began to search for a way to make it better....and the first true Big Lube Boolits were born!!!!!! ;D

I got lucky...PRS got SMART!!!! ;D 8) ;D 8)

Pole Cat Pete

I used big Lube boolits in lots of calibers with good results !! When I shoot now I still use them. BUT I do use the round ball in my Remington cap and ball Blasters.

I'll put anouther plug in for the big lube bullets and for D.D. to boot!  DD's good to do buisness with and I have big lube moulds for every black powder gun but one and hope to fix that before long.  They realy do work if your going to shoot more than 5-10 rounds real slow.  They keep the fouling soft and are pretty accurate too.  I won't say there as accurate as paper patched or jacketed with the big lube groves creating drag, but for iron sights and anything I've shot at up too a couple hundred yards, which is long range for what's basicly a pistol round, I haven't had a problem.  And the 250 grainer 45 PRS will drop a whitetail in it's tracks. ;D
