So the only way to get A S&W in .44 Russian is to get a Russian.
Can the trigger guard spur be cut off?
Was this ever done on originals? Were they ever available without the spur? I guess these were considered a Model 3? Correct?
Also can the cylinder be taken out to .44 Colt length? Would the ejector be able to work with the modern .44 Colt rim?

Nay help would be apprieciated.

It's not clear to me if you're talking about getting an original S&W or a clone?
Why would you consider the .44 Colt a better round?
Why not get a clone in .44 Spl and just shoot .44 S&W length cases?
It's not like the .44 Colt is a more powerful or more accurate cartridge.

If i cant track down a Laramie in .45 Colt i'll probably get a Russian and cut the spur off. For you though, if you want, you could get a .38 special Beretta Laramie and have it rebored for .44 Russian or .44 Colt.

John William McCandles: I have an Uberti Russian that left the factory in .44 Russian. Had  the chambers altered to accept .44 Colt. Works fine in the accuracy and ejection department. My rational for this alteration was purely logistics because all my .44 cal. pistols (mostly conversions) are loaded with .44 Colt/.429 dia bullets.

Let's see the subject line reads "Uberti S&W Russian" so I guess I'm asking about clones. I have never seen one offered in .44 spl. If they were available then .44 Spl would work.
All my other CAS/Re-enactment arms are in .44 Colt, or .44 Spl. I shoot .44 Colt or .44 Russian in the .44 Spl. chamberings.
So as Long Johns Wolf stated it's only for logistics purposes I am looking into this.

I would rather have a Scholfield  (the reason I'd cut the trigger guard spur off the Russian) if one were offered in 5" and .44 Colt/.44 Spl. Taylors offers them in .44 Russian but with a 3 1/2" barrel.

Yes the spur can be cut off.

Yes the first russians came without the spur, but they were identical to americans execpt for calliber.

Yes the extractor will work for 44colt.

I'm sure somewhere someone cut off the spur.

Good luck

Uberti's Schofield triggerguard fits the Uberti Russian.  VTIgunparts price is $42.  Part number is 850026.  It is one way to go if you don't want to get into cutting off the spur and refinishing the triggerguard, which would mess up the color case.

Thanks, that's a nice bit of information there pard.

It would be nice if one of the importer's could talk Uberti into making a 5" Schofield in .44 Russian or Colt.

They do make it in .44-40. Can you not use .44 Russian or Colt in that?

Russian will go bang for sure, but it could be a bit tough on your brass.
Now, if they have a .38 cylinder available, it could be chambered to .44 Russian.

To bad they just don't make another model besides the "Russian" in this fine chambering.
I've asked, wouldn't hurt if others inquired as well.

I've asked both Uberti and Taylors about having a .44 Colt Schofield made with the 5" and longer barrel.
Taylors does offer the Schofield in .44 Colt but with a 3" barrel so I asking them why not a run in 5" but seems they aren't interested. May be if enough interest is shown????

I just wish they would make them blackpowder-friendly like they're "supposed" to be, and then maybe I'd buy one!

I suppose if you wanted one bad enough, you could get the 3 1/2 thats offered in .44 Russian(it says Russian, not Colt on Taylor's site) then buy the longer barrel you want thats bored for the .44-40 model. Or if thats too much money, do as someone else suggested and buy the .38 special and have it bored out to .44 Russian or Colt.

I personally wish they'd bring back the Laramie, or atleast come out with another New Model 3 under the Uberti name.

I keep bugging them about a .44 Russian...Laramie, or similar. I really don't like the Russian Model grip.

It would have been soooo simple to make the cylinder / barrel relationship per the originals....but if they make the right model/caliber I'm willing to give-it-a-go. I really haven't had fouling problems with any of my revolvers.

I agree. I like the looks of the Russian and Schofield but ive got small hands and i think the New Model 3 would fit me perfectly. Plus i like the barrel latch on it like the Russian has. The frame-mounted Schofield latch doesnt look as secure to me. Plus from what i understand it, The New Model 3/Laramie can safely be carried with all 6 chambers loaded.

To answer the question in the OP...I used to deal in antique firearms, usually old west ones.  I've seen several 2nd and 3rd Model Russians with the spur cut or ground off.  It would seem to have been a fairly common alteration.  To do so to a clone would be historically accurate, IMO.
