Engraving question

I was looking at some Uberti pistols on gunbroker and saw some for sale as "engraved" and some as "hand engraved". At EMF I've seen the term "photo engraved" for GWII and "laser engraved" for the Remington Outlaw. Can anyone clarify these terms?

I think I can try to answer your question. I can show pix of a couple of engravings.

Engraved: would be the best and most expensive. Some one has done the engraving by hand. (either chisel and hammer, drill or dremmel)
Photo and laser engraving are terms almost used interchangably. Laser would be using a laser to do the tooling and often times the photo can be done with an acid etching. sometimes they can be mixed for a good result.
The pix above the dark pistol is an EMF Great Westen with photo engraving. The second pistol is a Taylors, was laser engraved and then some one came behind and chased the etching with a chisel. Looks more like hand engraving but isn't as costly as full hand engraving.
that type of engraving if you can find it in the amount on my gun would add $200-400 to a base price.
the EMF probably added about $200 to the price of the gun.
Hand engraving depending on the amout of engraving and quality would add $100-many thousands for quality full coverage.
engraving (or as Old Top calls it the "scratched up guns") is the beauty in the eye of the beholder. Some like it some don't .

Look close at engraving with a magnafing glass and you should be able to see the difference.

BTW I looked at the engraving on the newer Outlaws at EMF, and they are very nice, and deep cuts. Look very good. I would buy one.

Thanks for that...I like them "scratched up guns" too! Your pics helped. I knew what engraving is, but I couldn't tell from the site pics if the "photo/laser" engraving was something superficial on the surface, or if you could actually feel cuts into the metal. I thought maybe it was a picture of engraving laid on like some knives have lettering etched on the blade.
