Picked up a set of Treso nipples (model # 11-50-106) for my Pietta 61 Navy. CCI #10 caps that fit the factory Pietta nipples are way too tight on the new Treso nipples. Remington #11 caps are too loose. Have to do a road trip to pick up some Remington #10 caps to try. Is the inside measurement of the Remington #10 larger than the CCI #10 cap?

Tresos and Remington 10's are the best combination.

That has been my experience as well.  I have some older (metal tin about 12 yrs old) RWS 1075s that fit as well.

Treso also did a run of oversize #11 nipples.  If the 10s are too small, try an 11.

I've read that the diameter of the Remington #10 and #11 is identical and that the only difference is the length of the cap. Both fit on my Tresos nipples but the extra length of the #10 adds some extra friction making them feel less likely to fall off. I couldn't really tell a difference when I shot them though.

I primarily use the #11s because a) the place I ordered the nipples had the item listed as "Tresos Nipples for #11 cap" and b). the #11 caps fit better into my capper.

To add to Kflach's comment...

The Remingtons #10s and #11s differ only in length.  They have exactly the same internal diameter (~Ø.166)  the #10s are roughly .175" overall length and the #11s are about  .145" overall.  (The internal diameter was determined using gage pins .)

The reason one fits is tighter than the other has to do with the taper on the cone itself.  As it goes over it finally engages the taper on the cone unless the cone is "under sized" for that cap.  On a "smaller" cone you can put a #10 on that cone, have it fit snuggly and still bottom out against the priming compound in the top of the cap.  Some cones are larger in diameter and you will never bottom a #10 out against the flash hole face.  A  #11 is the answer for those.

I will say this another way as well, Remington #10s and #11s are the same diameter inside and out.  #10s are longer.  Cones are tapered, the longer cap (#10) will stop short of fully seating on a larger diameter cone. With either cap the taper finally engages the inside of the cap diameter.  On a "larger cone the  #11s will go on and bottom out because the end of the cap skirt is higher and engages further up the cone where the taper diameter is smaller.  So if a #11 fits snug, USE IT, otherwise try a #10.

If I have confused you I apologize. If I have tell me, and I will email you or provide an illustration.

Many thanks for the info compadres. Found a shop wot carries Remington #10 caps right here in Cheyenne, they fit the new Treso nipples like o glove. Price on em was a tad expensive at $6.99 with tax, next time I'm down in Aurora Colorado I can pick em up at Gander Mountain for $5.37 with tax.

Kinda pricey. I've been buying mine for $3.50, lots of 1M from The Brisco Kid.

Also +1 on the #10 Remingtons and Treso nipples.

$3.50 for 1,000?

That's them.  About 10 miles due west of me.  And I think he meant 3.50/tin, not case.  If he's right then I got royally taken at Comin' At Cha. ;D

Here's a photo of 5 different caps.  You can see the Rem 10 is the longest of all, so it should hold to a nipple better.

Could be I need to buy some a new tin of production Remington #11 caps. The ones I have are a number of years old, but they are definitely larger than Rem #10s. I have CCI #10, #11, RWS 1075, Dixie (CVA) #11s,  and Rem #10 & & 11s on-hand. The sealed tin of #11s I opened are marked $1.50  :o

I remember buying the CVA & Dixie to avoid the high cost of those Remingtons : ;)

You may credit me. ;) This illustration first appeared in my article in the The Shootist magazine, Sept./Oct 2007, p. 19. I have since posted it several times in here and on The Frontier Spot.

And the caps are, l. to r., Rem #10, Rem #11, Dynamit Nobel#1075, CCI#10, CCI#11.

A word of caution:

Not all TRESO nipples (cones) are created equal.  The TRESO nips used on Dragoons and (probably) Walkers are sized for #11 caps.  According to Fox Creek Kid, the original Colts used #12   caps.  When I got my Colt (tm) 2nd Gen., 1st Mod. Dragoon I noticed that the factory nipples were very long.  Longer than I've seen on any other guns.  At the time, I had on hand some CCI and Remington #10s, and some CCI, Remington, and German (RWS, I think) #11s.  NONE fit ... they were ALL too tight.

All in all, the TRESO brand Ampco (the material they're made from) nipples are very superior to the rest of what is out there. IMHO  The flash hole on the TR. nips is a smaller diameter than others which helps to cut back on the "back flash."  This, in turn, helps keeps the just-fired nipple to stay seated on the nipple rather than blowing off and down into the guts of the gun.

Incidentally, I have several sets of the old Uncle Mike's Stainless Steel nipples, and they are better than anything I've found ... except the TRESOs.  Trouble is, they're not available anymore.  Cabela's sells some replacement SS nips:  I've often wondered if they are the old Uncle Mike's product.  Anyone have experience with them?

With my guns, they all fit best with Remington #11s.  (3 sets of Unc. Mks, 1 set of TRESO)
