Here is a link to a book that was published in 1881, called The Household Cyclopedia. You can read it online, or download it as either a PDF or TXT file. I have it as a PDF, and it is 813 pages of information on just about anything you're interested in. It tells how to make your own matches, inks, plates used to take photographs, metallurgy, agriculture, tanning, pottery, medicine (including amputations), cooking, fishing, you name it!
