Shotgun Steve

From Herb Peck Collection. Quarter-plate tintype. The subject is holding a Winchester 73.
I wish I had more information to accompany this photo but I don't.

I wonder what that is around the wrist of the rifle?  Some sort of doodad?

That's the sharpest dressed Texas Ranger I've seen in any of the pictures I've come across from that time period. Thanks for posting it.

Icebox Bob

Small point - isn't the pictured reversed?  Or is that a rare 'left-handed' Winnie and that he buttons his vest 'girlie' style?   :)
Well.... see, if you take your time, you get a more harmonious outcome.

Same picture flipped back. Some 'period photos' show everything 'mirror image' .....I 'think' that is how one might describe it...others might have better termonology on the tenique...but I know you see this situation 'often' in period images.

Montana Slim

...when I was a kid (8 or 9), I recall asking my dad why they thought Billy the Kid was a lefty......I showed dad a picture in a book of Billy posing with his rifle and noted the loading port was on the wrong side & the photo must be reversed. Therefore he was right-handed. Dad thought that was funny I noticed such a thing  :D

Pete, I wndered if the "doodad" on the rifle wrist is a thong for securing the weapon to his saddle.

Slim

The tin type process results in a reversed image.

How was he Id'ed as being a Ranger?
Looks like he bought mostly new stuff for the photo session. I did notice that his hands look somewhat pasty and soft for a man who'd spend a lot of time in the back country.
Yes, I do have more facial hair now.
