I just came across an old model Vaquero Bisley in 44mag.. It is stainless with wood grips, fixed sights and looks like new.

1.  Would this be a good gun for CAS?
2.  Since I don't reload, is there cowboy 44mag. ammo. available commercially that would meet the rules?
3.  What is the difference between this and the new model?
4.  If this is a good CAS gun, what would be a fair price to offer for it in like new condition?

Thanks

Lee,

In an attempt to answer your questions:
1. Yes, and it is nearly indestructible
2. You can find appropriate loads in 44 Special.  Since I don't know your level of knowledge, I'll point out that the 44 Mag is just a
lengthened 44 Special, thus you can shoot either cartridge in the gun.
3. This model has a heavier frame and cylinder and frame than the new model, and thus is beefy enough to handle the 44 Mag.
The new model is very similar in dimensions to the Colt Model P, thus is much smaller and lighter.
4.  I'm not sure what a current price should be.

1   Yes this would be a good choice, I shoot .44s but mine are not the Bisleys.
2   Yes there are commercially available .44 mag cowboy loads available.
3   The old model is stronger and heavier than the new model. The new models are not offered in .44mag.
4   Here is a listing on Gunbroker that seems like a good deal to me.http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=155577598

Just so you know in case you plan on shooting NCOWS, the Ruger Vaquero Bisley is not legal. It is legal for SASS shoots.

Thanks guys,

One more question. How much heavier is the old model, and do you think that is a disadvantage compared to the new model?

LL,
Just a thought, Bisley's with sights would limit participation in some of the SASS classes.

In my opinion the extra weight is an advantage, due to less perceived recoil and quicker to get back on target. Besides , how long do you plan to have to hold it up, 20 seconds on a bad day. ;D

Thanks again for the help guys.  I think I'll make him an offer.

SASS has eliminated the distinction between fixed and adjustable sights.  You can compete in any of the categories with it.

I've got a couple I use for SASS and shoot gunfighter.  I love them.  There is a local cowboy shooter who has a SS 44 pair for sale also but for a grand so Gunbroker's look like a pretty good deal.

I have a set of gunfighter checkered grips and seems to be easier to grap, just my opinion.

He needed a lot of baptizin' so I just held him under a little too long.  And your point is?
