I'm thinking I've seen a brass "U.S." device like Army officers wear on their blouse lapels except maybe 2 1/2" high. Though this might be something used on some sort of military horse gear (like a breast strap?), but I can't find any source that addresses it.

Any help?

Thanks.

sounds like 1904 headstall rosettes

Letters and periods are free-standing, not on a plate or backing of any sort.  I can't find a picture of the rosettes you referred to, but most I've seen are stamped from a sheet of brass with a disc background...all from a single brass sheet.

St. George

Not horse gear, unless it's chevrac ornament - not uniform insignia, either.

What's the backing like - is there a pin or small loops?

If there are loops - then it's a chevrac ornament .

2 1/2" would be a Large rosette

try martingale
Mathew 5.9

 except I took them off headstall ( he said Maybe 2 1/2 ") mine measure 2 1/8"
they were driver headstalls with blinders and there were smaller 1" hollow back ones on the blinders
Circa M1904 Mule team

and the orginial Heart Rossetts are also 2 1/8"

It's been years since I saw then and if I remember (and any more I generally don't) the back had two wire loops soldered on but were not lear filled.

I'd like to see whatever some of you good ol' boys have if you can do it.

With the loops you described they sound like rosettes...I hadn't owned a Cav headstall in many years now just couldn't picture the rosettes that big, Ones for a Drafthorse may be bigger that what I remember
Mathew 5.9
