I went to Cabelas to get supplies for my 58 Remmy  NMA .44- with the brass. They had APP FFFG, so I picked some up. I've just come across some threads where they were talking about APP and how you really have to make sure the brass is cleaned afterward or it'll get corroded. I can do that. Apparently the APP also doesn't produce much flame and to be honest, that's something I look forward to. Therefore, I'm wondering if anyone knows of a place in the Dallas/ Ft. Worth area that carries the Goex FFFG (I keep reading good things about it)? Is it something I need to order online?

What about Bass ProShop or maybe Cheaper Than Dirt?

Howdy kflach, check the top of the page (Dark Arts) for alota good info. I order mine from Graf's, 22lbs at a time cause the hazmat fee increases after 22. I like Graf's house brand (Schuetzen) it burns a little cleaner than Goex. All of Graf's prices include shipping with a small handling fee, $4.50.  I've also gone in on a group buy from Dear Creek. Good to have you on the Dark Side, you're gonna love the real stuff!! 8) Good Luck.

Gibson's Trading post on Lawson Road off Hiway 80 between Dallas and Terrell usually carries it by the pound.  I dont think FW Fire Marshall's will let Cheaper Than Dirt keep the real thing.  Big stink in the paper about a year ago because they stored a large quantity of ammo period.  My side kick and I buy it 25 pounds at a time because of the price break from one of the distributors. :)

Second the motion to order a case. I've bought from Powder Inc. several times. Find a local pard to split the case with if you don't want that much on-hand.

Now, make some fire!

It's the only place in the DFW area I'm familiar with that carries Goex.

They were @ about $20/lb for all granulations the last time I was in there, a few months ago... Powder, Inc. is a substantial savings in 25lb lots... you can mix granulations and brands also!

I'm going to go to my first SASS event this weekend and meet The Comanche Valley Vigilantes. I'm hoping to develop some friendships/mentor relationships that I can enjoy and learn from. Maybe I can find a pard to share larger quantities of "The Holy Black" with.

The down side to all this is that this is my first gun and it'll probably be a while before I can justify buying more guns as well as the clothing required to participate in SASS events. Even if someone is willing to loan me their guns, I've never shot the types of rifles and shotguns that are used for CAS so there will be a learning curve that'll take a little time.

Thanks for the info. I'm perfectly willing to drive out to Gibson's for real BP. It sounds like it'll take about an hour to get there (I'm in Arlington) but I like cranking up the tunes and driving so it'll be fun.

Come out to Greenville next Saturday 25 Jul for SASS and Sunday 26 Jul and give NCOWS a try.  Directions to the Range are on the Texas Ten Horns web page.  We would be glad to have any one interrested come out and give us a try.  If I get my sorry self home from this TDY trip in time I will be there on Sunday as I pretty much shoot NCOWS anymore.

Thanks for the invite, Tascosa Joe. I'm already planning on taking the missus and meeting the CVV on the 25th - they're the organization closest to my home and I'm trying to make it 'easy' for my wife to decide she likes this. I've got a commitment Sunday so I can't go anywhere that day.

I'd found the Texas Ten Horns web site last Friday and I figured I'd check out NCOWS as well but I'll probably have to wait until the 2nd weekend in August for that. I notice their website mentions a new "Greehorn class for those new to SASS/CASS." That sounds especially tempting.

kflach, Go to any range you can and introduce yourself. You will not find any strangers there. Most clubs will give you up to a year to be in line with your equipment. NCOWS are a little more strict in the rule department as to weapons, gun carts and such. I went to 5 matches before signing up and had three offers to use guns at my first match. Not many sports offer that up today. I finally broke down and signed up and love it. Nothing like a windless day and you are using your hand to clear the front sight area so that you can fire with all the laughter in the background.

For anyone following this topic, I just called Gibson's Outpost. They still carry black powder in 1 lb. cans.

Pulp

The BassPro at Grapevine did carry it a few years ago.  I haven't been there since.  The first time I was there I asked a kid behind the gun counter if they sold black powder.  His eyes went blank, he thought for a moment and said, "All our powder is right over there, but I don't know what color it is."

I walked away, thinking, "This kid is selling guns and ammunition to people."

Later I went back and asked another clerk.  "Yup, but you have to get it over in the pistol range where we keep it in a safe."

Much better response.

I know they still have the indoor range - I saw it yesterday. However, I suspect that by now they're like the rest of the big stores and only carry BP Substitutes. I'll ask 'em next time I'm there. It would be a much shorter drive than Mesquite. Thanks!

FWIW, I was at BPS in Grapevine a week ago and they did have Goex 3f for $20 a lb but wouldent say how much they had.Sa :-\m
