howdy! got me a new (to me) pietta 58,looks real purdy(cabellas) but takes two mules and a 4th grader to cock the hammer, i can take care of that, but here's the "interestin" parrt, when you cock the hammer, she "squeaks". can't figger out where it's comin from, but sure is annoyin' me, any ideas?also, when i read about polishing parts, is there any thing here that describes what parts to smooth out? i looked in archives did'nt find what i was lookin for, but then agin, i may have missed it. thanx for any help.....................Warren T Upp

I can't answer you for sure but I would suspect the squeak is coming from the roller, on the hammer, that rubs on the hammer spring.

Pietta has replacement hammer springs that will make cocking the hammer easier. They are available from VTI

You can easily tell if BS is right by putting a drop of oil onto the hammer roller that is visible right at the top of the backstrap when the hammer is down on a nipple. The squeak will be gone instantly after the oil works down onto the mainspring tip below the roller.

Another possibility is the mainspring is sometimes a little too long and it rubs on the back of the hammer when cocked. The cocking effort will be heavier until the length is reduce a tiny bit so the tip of the spring doesn't contact the back of the hammer. You have to take the grips off and look at the spring tip while you cock the gun to tell.

I wouldn't oil that one. :o

For the op, look for any burrs or rough surfaces on any moving parts and were parts move over the frame.  Just the other day a friend brought over a 58 that had a catch on one chamber when cocking.  Found a burr in the hand channel in the frame and a burr on the hammer at the bottom of the cam.  Nice and smooth now.

Agree with Hellgate on the mainspring length rubbing on the rear of the hammer. Sounds right to me.

On the mainspring, you'd be out nothing to thin the current hammer down to lighten your pull. I've done a number with no problems. There is even a handy tension screw to adjust the remodeled spring to have more or less tension. Any method to thin the thickness and/or width of the spring is fine. polish marks should go the "long" direction of the spring. Alos, hold in hands will working it. If its too hot to hold, stop and cool it off in water before proceeding. If your all thumbs and ruin the spring you can always order that new one
