Just Ordered a pair of Taylor's

I did it

I ordered me a pair of taylor early model open top's in 38 special with the 4 3/4 barrel

I was reading awhile ago, someone was talking about changing barrels, so that got me to thinking, which is a bad thing

And i went to Taylors site and looked at parts, I was just thinkung that someday I might want long barrel guns, so in the parts they only show barrel's for the late models, I thought the only diff. between the early and late models was in the rear frame grip size

So will the barrels of a late model fit the early models?

Same gun except for the grip size. No such thing historically as an early or late model Open Top. Taylor calls them that to differentiate between the Navy grip frame (which they call the old model) and the Army grip frame (which they call the new model). You will love them. One thing I would recommend is that you replace the firing pins. The stock ones are skinny, soft, and not terribly well made. I will do that. I got another question to ask you, what style of rig do you where when packing these? As you know I am new to this so here is my thoughts, should I buy a rh cross drawn and a lh cross draw and a good belt, or should I just buy a left and a right with a good belt, and where the left on the right and right on the left? If I had the money I would have both types of holsters plus more!

I shoot Frontier Cartridge Duelist and Frontiersman. I shoot fairly fast. I don't know exactly know how you would be planning to use a LH and RH cross draw at the same time. Unless, you are gonna shoot double duelist or something like that. I use a regular strong side weak side setup. That way you can draw either pistol depending on the stage. With a cross draw you have to use the same hand on the cross draw all the time. Cuts down on your flexibility. Carrying them butt forward looks cool, but you ain't gonna win no speed events with them. Someone will likely disagree and say their buddy just won the East Jesus Nevada Invitational or something like that. But, the bottom line is NO top shooter uses butt forward and most don't use cross draws anymore either. Of course, if you are just going out for pure fun, wear whatever you like!!! YeeHaa, it's about having a good time. Do what you are going to have fun doing.

Hi, Ace. I'm ordering a pair of Early Model Open Tops .38 Spec. as well. Would you tell me what type of holsters to look for ? Would any holster for .38's work?

Historically, Slim-Jim style holsters would be most appropriate.
I shudder at the thought of an open-top Colt riding in a CAS "speed-rig"

Montana,,,you mean you draw with your right hand from a butt forward rig hanging on your right side ? I kinda like the deal myself,,but wasn't sure SASS folks allowed that. Wasn't sure they didn't either..just didn't know,,and with all the 'dance of angles' one has to be careful to do,,,

So, its SASS legal to draw butt forward (with hand and gun on SAME side), twist the revolver and proceed to shoot ?

Yes, I pull each revolver with the corresponding hand using a twist-draw and never break the 170 with this style. I do not "rwist" the pistol until the muzzle is clearly downrange. This method allows me to carry both pistols high & tight & still get them out of the holsters. Its really the most comfortable and practical way to carry and draw 8" barrel pistols. Been doing this at matches for 10+ years & field carrying this way since I was a boy with my first C&B. I used to always explain to the R.O., before shooting, what I was going to do & how, then demo in slow motion and then at normal speed so they knew what to expect. Not a big deal today &as a number of folk have copied my style ( I appreciate the flattery of imitation). No "dance" for me with this style.

Per the SASS manual, it appears to be legal...except for gunfighter it is specifically cited as a no-no. Of course this is horse-hockey. I can easily pull both and never break the 170 either. Of course my holsters are not angled....straight down configuration slim-jims. Now, if I could just shoot as well left-handed as right.

With other guns/rigs I may do a cross draw..Particularly if I have a shorter pistol in my "kit".

Why Larsen, y'all shot with me a couple of years ago and know how well I close I came beatin' you and Cid with my backassward style.
And it was the East Yahoo New Hampshire Free For All Match I won...

Ace - make sure if you try butt forward plainsman style drawing to practice in a mirror, a lot. The harder part is putting them back to leather, takes some getting used to.
