Howdy gents. Does anyone use the Lansky sharpening system for any of their leather tools or blades?

It looks like it could work pretty well, at least for maintaining a proper angle on the blade. I don't know about the quality of the stones.

If not the Lansky, is there some other system you are using? Getting a good, consistent edge still seems to be eluding me.

Thanks, JD

Hi JD

I use the Tandy sharpening devise, and there stones, the Lansky is a good unit for knife blades, at least that's what I've heard, being from the meat business I have the ability to sharpen knives without any help aids, the swivel knife blade aid from Tandy being the exception, and it works well, and I do use it with good results, make sure you use honing oil when working on the stone, you won't get the results your looking for without it. Tandy also sells a Three stone Tri sharpening unit, I use this for my leather tools only, and my other stones for my knives.

Thanks 10 Wolves, I appreciate the feedback. I have the swivel knife holder Tandy sells, and that helps. The Osborne chisel I bought is a little rough, trying to pull it back out of the leather, but it is light years ahead of the Tandy chisel. The next time I am in downtown Portland, I'm going to check out what other stitching chisels they might have, just out of curiosity..

Thanks my friend, have a great day! JD

JD, I use the Lansky system on my woodworking chisels.  I don't see why it would not work on leather tools also.  Just remember to strop them well when done.

That's what I was wondering about. This stitching chisel is close to a woodworking chisel, at least in the angle. Thanks Bodie, I appreciate you weighing in on this, JD

Next time I have to sharpen a leather tool, I will try it.  If you get there before I do, let us know how it works out.

G'Day JD,What is the Lansky system?? I have a wedge of pine timber (like a door stop)that I use to sharpen my blades,I just lay the whole knife on the wedge so the blade is the right angle & sharpen away.Feathers

G'Day TW,Thanks for the info,I got it now-I think my piece of pine was cheaper though :P Feathers

Feathers, a wedge of wood is a good idea, and you're correct, a whole lot cheaper. After looking at the Lansky system, the chisel won't fit in it anyway, so I think a wood wedge the proper angle, or close to it will work just fine. Thanks

Feathers is right, if you're not sure how to hold a tool or blade, an aid like a wedge cut at the correct angle for the exact tool your sharpening is a good way to go and like you said it doesn't cost  much if anything at all. ??? ::)
