It's a disease...  It is for me, anyway.  If you do a search, you will see that I bought a 10ga Damascus-barreled hammer double called the "Field Rival" a few months ago, and it is a beaut!

I had the barrels Magnafluxed and found no problems, so I think it is ready to shoot!  Of course, just when I get ready to shoot it, I break the lever-return spring.... :-[  So, it's currently at the gun doctor's getting that malady fixed.  In the mean time, I did something that may be good, or may be very bad....  Every day, I search Gun Broker, Auction Arms and Guns America for a Remington 1889 or a Colt 1878 10ga hammer double.  Well, the other day I found the Colt.  It's not pristine (based on the description and pics), but I pulled the trigger on it, and it should be here next week some time.  Stand by for news.....

The bottom line is that persistence pays off!  Keep looking, they are out there!  Then you get the thrill and joy of trying to find 10ga reloading components.  Once again, they are out there, but quite a bit pricier than 12ga stuff.

The hunt continues!!!!   ;D

Howdy!
I did the same search several years back, just after "Open Range" came out.  Yep, wanted a 10g SXS with exposed hammers after he blew that mirror to smithereens! The only ones I found were damascus barrelled and looked terrible or were museum pieces (and priced so).  I did find out that some were probably made with fluid steel barrels just after the turn of the century (never saw one), and a high end Italian shotgun maker supposedly made some in the 1960s (again, never saw one). In the end, I found several Spanish made modern internal hammered 10g SXSs, all by Zabala Hermanos.  Gave a 1970's one to a friend, kept the newer ones with the chrome lined bores (sooo nice when shooting BP; makes lead removal and clean up miraculously quick!).  BTW, Zabala still makes 'em; it's their 213 magnum, but no one imports them into the US at present.
(My good pard did eventually find a museum quality 1870's damascus barrelled hammered 10g SXS (imported by Charles Daly, I believe), but I felt it was too pretty to shoot and it's been a safe queen ever since.  It's for sale, if you've got about $2000...)
Good luck in your search!

Kurt,

Call around to your local automotive machine shops.  Many of them do Magnafluxing on engine parts.  I just got lucky, and found a local machine shop run by a guy who collects old shotguns.  At least he knew what he was looking at.  As for the oddball cartridges, you and me both.  The bottom line is that if I can walk into Wal-Mart and buy it, I'm not interested!  I haven't loaded a smokeless cartridge in five years...but LOTS of BP cartridges in 45-60, 45-70, 50-70, 56-50 Spencer, .45 Colt, .44 Colt, .45 Schofield, .44 Russian, .38 LC, 12ga and 10 ga.....oh, and 32-20 and 38-55...don't want to leave those out.   ;D
