Just picked up two saddles today on ebay, vintage, and one has a mark behind the cantle 1922.  It is the one in the best shape.  Should be able to just clean this one up.  The other is in need of some work, stiching...straps etc.  The best part they were both under $100 each.   Anxious to receive them to get a closer look.

Those are nice looking saddles, Cattleman. You got a good buy, there. It'll be nice to see the pics after they're cleaned and restored.

Thanks, I am new at this so I'll probably be asking lots of questions.

The pards here seem to know what they're talking about so any answers you get will be good ones.

Anybody recognize this mark?  Had someone suggest that it might be a year of a championship rodeo event winners saddle that is donated to a collector....  I am hopping that I can find a makers mark when I finally receive the saddle next week.

It's a serial number. Usually found on the frog, the tree, and the latigo keeper. Keep lookin' for that maker's mark. :D
Just because you CAN ride the hide off a horse, doesn't mean you should.

Received the saddles today, the best one has all original leather in great shape, can't wait to start cleaning it this weekend.  The other is not all original, but I bought that one for the tree, which is solid. When I get more experience with leather crafting, Iwould like to rebuild this one to new.  All in all, very satisfied.

The 1922 is is a model number. It looks like it might be a Simco saddle or other "Tennesee"made saddle.
the tree appears to be a little wonder  style. The fleece looks like synthetic so its not too old.
When you look under the  jockeys look to see if  the rigging is stapled or nailed. That will let you know that its a factory made saddle .
It looks like a Simco or even an American saddlery. Im just guessing but youll be able to tell when you start pulling the leather off.

Congrats, pard. Keep us in the loop as you work on 'em.

Thanks Don, your right about the fleece, it has a cloth backing.  I was planning to replace it with natural, I'll have to stich it in. I'll also replace the laces and conchos and rings.   The leather is in great shape, some of the straps need replacing to make this a usable saddle.  After I clean and recondition and get to a final color, I will have to match the new straps. The other saddle is going to be rebult from the tree which is very solid.  A good year to year and a half project since I am a newbe.  Got some things to learn first.
