Hey,

I am working on making a die which will produce blanks for my .45 Schofield Spencer. I just need a blank sizing die with a small pilot hole pre-drilled through it and the external threads already cut. Basically a die that hasn't been made into a particular caliber yet. Does anybody know of a source? MidwayUSA has them, but what I need has been out of stock for weeks and it looks like it will be for weeks to come. Thanks a bunch.

A wile ago I supplied some of my Henry blanks to a person with a 45 Schofield.  They are made with .44 Mag brass.  You can look at how they are made by going to my web site a reading the Henry article.  http://www.9thnycavalry.webeditor.com/publications/spencer_article.html
He has been using them ever since and according to him they cycle and chamber great.

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a handsome, and well preserved body; but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out and loudly proclaiming...."WOW!... What a ride!"

Bluesuit01,

Would you please post the Midway link to what you're looking for/to buy that has been out of stock?

Thanks,

I haven't seen any recently, but a couple of years ago Hornady had a set of cowboy blank dies they offered for sale and I ordered a set.  It consists of two dies.  One is a star crimp die that forms the initial star crimp.  The second die rounds the star crimp over more so it is completely closed.  The set can be used to produce many different calibers of cowboy blanks just by adjusting the length that the dies are screwed into your loading press.  One I get the lenght set, I make up a dummy round in that caliber and use it to set-up the dies the next time I need to reload more blanks in that particular caliber.  I've used these dies to make up .38 Special, .38 Colt, .44 Special, .44-40, .45 Schofield, and .45 Long Colt blanks.  I haven't tried making any .45-70 blanks with it yet, but I'm thinking about doing that.  You might check with Hornady to see if they are still making these dies.

Thank you for the info. I actually got my hands on the midway die and had a blank die made a while back, but I will look into this too.
