I've been making rigs for about a year now, but I'm about to start carving for the first time. There's an awful lot to choose from. If it's not a heck of a lot to ask, might some pards list their favorite basic tool numbers? Maybe a list of ten?

FEATHERS

G'Day Skeeter,I'm looking at 2008 Tandy cattledog they show Craftool Basic Seven Tool Set #8170-00.These 7 tools include swivel knife-camouflage-shader-beveler-veiner-seeder-backgrounder.Hope this helps Feathers

Skeeter Lewis

Thanks, Feathers.

It may seem I've made a selfish request. I thought a list might be of use to other carvers also.

Skeeter, when I get home, I will try to post some numbers of my favorites. Most of them are useful in one form or another, but I do have a few favorites.

Howdy
Here is what is in the beginner set my students get
A 104, B701, C433, P217, V407, S722. Add to that a H907 U858 B971.
Hope this helps.

WC's list is exactly what I would recommend. You can do most of what you want with those tools. Get the optional three he listed when you can, too. For years I did most of my work with those first five. When I added the H907, I thought I'd died and gone to heaven. I have another bevel simiilar to the B971 that I use more than any other (it isn't made anymore). The U858 adds another dimension, too.

All the ones mentioned, plus B206. I modified my 206 a little bit, by filing the deep part of it flatter than it is from the factory. Originally, it has a slight curve to the back of it, and making it flat made it perfect for what I use it for.
This is what I use when doing borders and long straight bevel jobs. Its a little wider than the normal beveler, and takes less whacks to completion.

I've got some others I dont know the number,....a small undercut beveler,

You've got a good start. You'll be able to do a lot with those.
