Large & Thick Through Hole Rivet

Hi Y'all,

This is probably a pretty simple thing to find if you know how to ask for it ....

I am thinking about getting my 15" bowie knife (its like drawing a short saber!) off of my gun belt, and having a belt to strap the sheath below my knee. To keep it from flopping about, I want to add a drawstring (similar to something at the botttom of a quick draw holster ).

The perfect way would be to replace the rivet at the bottom tip of the sheath with a large hollow rivet that would allow a loop of latigo to be pulled through it.

It would also have to be thick enough to connect to the 'female' side of the rivet, through three layers of leather.

I have the exact ring that I need; but the shaft is just not long enough to go through three layers of leather.

Anyone know where I can find a hollow rivet that has a shaft approximately 1/4 to 5/16 inch thick? I have the rivet with the right internal diameter,  but the male side of the rivet is a little less than 3/16 (5/32nds?) tall.

If Tandy or some company has them, I would appreciate what to call them and, in a perfect world, a part number .....

Thanks!!

I'd sure like to see a picture of that 15 inch Bowie knife!  ;D JD

Whoa JD,

Don't get too het up about the Bowie; it is a standard Texas Jack's $20.00 bowie.

But I am chuffed because a well known knife craftsman has offered to acid etch the blade and add a staghorn handle ... which should make it look far more period correct than it does now ....

Here is the catalog web address:

Thanks for the picture, Pard. I'm always curious as to what people are using for knives with their rigs. It sounds like yours is going to look pretty sharp. Yeh, pun intended  ::)

Thanks, JD

I think anything would be an improvement ... I bought it on a whim and it is not the knife I would like. Too thick/wide a blade/too modern looking a handle...

Wad you could always hire someone to carry it around for you, I'm a big guy, If had to carry that around all day, I'd put it on across over, ( like a bandoleero,) with the handle on the down side, trying to put this on your leg or hip doesn't work well for very long, they used to carry knives like this when it was the only weapon they had.

Ten Wolves,

Sometimes preference is simply choosing what one is used to ... I chose my Schofields because they fire and feel like the old Webley Mk VI that I have had for decades ... only better!

I carried a knife for a long time on my right calf as part of my work, so I think it will feel very familiar as long as it doesn't flop around.....

I understand Wad, if you do something long enough, or wear something long enough, it becomes part of you.

Slowhand Bob

WWE, some times back a cowboy friend wanted to go into the buisiness of making snap top, leather covered wooden ammo blocks.  Well it kinda broke his heart to find out that these critters were already everywhere and his stroke of genius had come from seeing one at some earlier match.  After a bit of thinking about how to make this work as something new, it was decided that attaching a pivoting leather top that used an extra long shanked grommet loosely attached for the pivot was the answer.  I actually made him four leather tops with snap attachments at both ends and have never heard back from him on a source for the extra long shank grommets since!!!!  Being one who loves to belabor a point, this is my way of asking, are you also looking for some of the extra long shank grommets????

WaddWatsonEllis

Slowhand Bob,

Belabor away ... that was actually what I needed, but did not have the right vocabulary to ask for it. So ... I found some larger grommets (1/2" ID) that were just barely the right shank depth. With some animated pounding on the anvils, I got this grommet on with about 1/32nd" overlap of the shank onto the ring of the grommet. To me it looks much too large, but will have to do.

So I guess this thread is now a non-issue unless someone else has questions about grommets ....
