Howdy all

Does anyone know where I can get my paws on a "CS" (as in Confederate States) stamp?

For an FYI. One of the conditions for surrender of the Confederate Armies was that all CS related insignia had to be removed or covered from view before the soldiers were "pardoned" or "paroled" and sent home. This is why many of the remaining CS uniform items that still exist today have the buttons missing or covered with cloth. Some items do manage to have the buttons intact but there is a strong argument that these items could have been sent home via mail or the button reattached before the clothing article was put away for posterity.

After nearly 4 years of war most former soldiers were only too glad to return to civilian life and stop wearing the rough and coarse woolen jeans, satinettes and occasionally imported kersey that were usually either too small or too big, and wear proper fitting and at least better made clothing.

Historically speaking most CS manufactured items didn't have the CS stamped on them, but their were exceptions.

Do you think that an Ex-Reb could jes hope no one noticed?  The GAR would have their jollies correctin' the sitiatshun!

A friend of mine is a descendant of an old pre- '49 Oregon ranching family.  Espesialy there, the GAR was very, VERY, strong.

Actually for those that stayed in the south, the occupying army would (maybe) say something, and I've read accounts of minor squabbles between Rebel vets and the army. One of the funniest accounts I ever read was from an area in central Kentucky that feilded both a very good CS regiment and a very good US regiment that the vets started out fighting each other in fist and knife fights not long after the war, and eventually they started banding together to fight the army because the both sides felt the martial law imposed upon Kentucky was unjust. They also whipped up on those that didn't bother to join the military of either side.

My mom's from Kentucky. Maybe that's where I get that ornery streak from :P JD
