Hello. How are you doing? I recently came into possession of a spencer m1860 repeating carbine. The serial number is #24286. It is a lovely looking firearm and I am told it is in working condition. The previous owner past away and I was given the gun.I am trying to trace the history of the gun.I was wondering if this gun was used in the Civil War and if it was who used it.It would be interesting as to how this gun made it this far north.I live in Ontario Canada.I am thinking about selling the gun.It looks as good as any that I have seen on the internet. Any help that you can offer would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hello Clark C.,

Sorry, but your serial # 24286 does not fall close enough to other serial #s to even closely determine to which unit it was assigned to during the Civil War.  The best guestimation I can give you is that it may have been assigned to either Co. L of the 2nd New York Volunteer Cavalry or Co. F of the 19th New York Volunteer Cavalry. AND this is a very tenuous or generous guestimation on my part.
