The .22 side match at the upcoming National Shoot will be cancelled.  There are problems that cannot be reconciled at present.

NO .22 SIDE MATCH.    NO .22 SIDE MATCH.    NO .22 SIDE MATCH

Bob, I sure hate to see that. :(  I doubt many would have brought inappropriate guns anyway ::)  Oh well mine is already packed so I might as well bring it. :)

I was trying to decide between my 1890 Wichester and my Hopkins & Allen falling block.
[And of course I would loan either one to any one who wanted to shoot and did have an appropriate .22* ]

I may bring one any way.  Maybe Pete and I can have an informal .22 shoot.
[ Trap probably already has his packed too.]

When it comes up for discussion, we will also need to address the reproduction 1866 in 22.
While the 66 would be period, they were never made in 22.

Was the 1866 was never made in any of the calibers that the clones are available in today?  If not does that mean none would be legal?  Kinda starts to eliminate a lot of firearms.  Then comes choice of powders... Could eliminate people who currently meet the guidelines and now are suddenly no longer in compliance.  Not sure we want to go down that trail.  It would seem to be counter to the recruiting effort.

Sorry to see the 22cal. Side match canceled....

that said..I stand with OCB and the others that we should heed the convictions of NCOWs
They are what, drew me in....  difference from the other regiment.

As to calibers of Clones ... I doubt many of us could afford shoot....if we had to adhere to orginial cal. Only

I figure the reproduction 1866 in 22 should be allowed, but if a list is made, it should be on one of them, acceptable or not acceptable.

The one I have dates back to 1965. One of the interesting tidbits about it, the internal side plates are marked 117, the sn of the gun doesn't end with 117. It took me a little time to come to the conclusion that it was 22 caliber #117.

Dusty,

I'm with you on that one.  I'd like to see it approved.  Always drooled over them, but never bought one.

See ya in Evansville!

There were a few 66's and 73's chambered for 22, altho they would of been for the short or long, long rifle didn't come around till near the end of the century.
If you get real picky, there'ld be no 66's in 38special or 45 colt. A henry in anything but 44 henry flat wouldn't be allowed either.
Getting to wound up in what was or wasn't could be a slippery slope.

Actually, there were no Model 1866's made in .22, though there were 19,552 Model 1873's made for .22 Short - in the original blackpowder load.

I've owned and sold off a couple of the originals, and they're nice, but an oddity - and every one I've seen had a shot-out  and eroded chamber from improper cleaning over time.

Shooting modern .22 Short risks the rifles' metallurgy - even if re-lined.

There are enough 'good' replicas of the original .22s and even more originals in shootable condition that can easily be used in such a proposed Side Match to stay well within NCOWS' guidelines.

A personal preference for such a Side match would be to replicate an early Shooting Gallery, with falling Pipes and Disks and the like.

Those highly popular establishments could be found at any Amusement Arcade and were a staple of the Travelling Circuses, as well.

Looking back in the early '60's - Liberty Firearms was importing a nice replica of the Stevens-Lord Tip-Up single-shot target pistol that was made in West Berlin.

A couple of those would add well to such an Arcade venue.

Vaya,

Scouts out!

Well darn I won't get to use my Remington pump 22 and I can shoot the eye out of a treed coon with it. Done it many times, you all wouldn't have stood a chance. Of course some one would have to hold the light for me. Tj  ;D  ;D  ;)

You know now that I think on it, not only would my Remington pump not been legal, I would have wanted to shoot it at night. Oh yes, some one would have had to hold the coon hunting light on the target. It might be best that it is cancelled, no one would have wanted to shoot it my way any how. Probably would not be able to keep the targets in the trees. Rowdy would have got tired out climbing and placing the targets back. Well I sure was looking forward to it. I have ever told you all the story of the siamese coon I got after. It was joined at the back. Boy he could run. When one got tired, they just flip and the other would run for awhile. Hard for one dog to catch it. Well it happened just this way. Oh it's too long to tell here. Remind me at the National and I'll tell the whole story. It's  all truth too. Tj   ;)  :D  ;D  ;D

This thread got me to thinking and reminiscing  :)
And a bit sad too....

You see, I have the very first gun my late Dad ever gave me, It is also one of two I learn to shoot.
Dad gave it to me when I was a boy of 12 or 13, He & I had been shooting some 6 years before that along with his H&R 999 revolver
It is a Model 341-A Bolt Action Remington they only made these 4 years from 1936-40 ,mine is 73 years old.
I have not shot this old 22 in a mighty long time, certainly not since Dad passed in 86  :-[
It's been, in gunsock in a back corner on the gun closet a long time.

So thanks to this thread, I decided to pull the old girl out... I know she not NCOWS, but I'm very fond of her... I've had her 50 years.

Bore is bright, action is smooth and crisp.. the Blue has turned brown , Wood ? well not so great, solid but shows wear
I need to find a Butt plate and I'll restore the wood.

I'm going shoot her again... remembering Dad  :)

shoot a coon in the eye? nah you are supposed to bring em out hot for the dogs, least thats what my dad always thought til I was holding the 3 hounds one night and he butt shot one with a .22 short, ran to the end of the limb and jumped for safety. The safety of the back of my neck ! I just curled up in a little ball as the dogs swarmed me.

Tjackstephens

Lone Gunman, I always wondered what happened to that coon that got away. You see I was using one of those bullets that don't make much noise. They also don't have much power. Now you know why he has an eye patch. Tj

Pinto Jim, We no longer have jump out season here in KY but use to. My buddy Marvin DeWitt could really climb. Now you tall about making a tree dog. They soon learn to quite barking when Marvin started up the tree, then they watch and listen till the coon hits the ground. Oh yes Marvin carried a sharp stick to poke the coon out. Those bleeding hearts made us cancell the jump out season. Now drive through KY and see how many are laying dead on the side of the road. You got to know a coon had reather go out fighting than be run over by a semi. Hope to see you all at the National. Tj
