What Would You Like In Here?

I found the Race Gun discussion interesting. I would like to read more about how different guns perform and what (if any) modifications people find useful.

I would also like to see some discussion of how you disect a stage and decide how to shoot it.

For instance, a stage starts with shooter standing at a centrallly located table. There is a firing circle 20 feet to the left of the table and a shooting circle to the right of the table. Pistols are holstered, rifle and shotgun are staged at the central table. Rifle is to be shot from the left circle, shotgun from the right circle.  At the beep shoot first pistol five shots on three targets. Repeat with second pistol. Shooter may then choose to shoot either the rifle or shotgun next. The first long gun to be shot has to be carried from the table to the circle and returned to the table.

Which do you shoot first, the rifle or shotgun? Why? Does it make a difference if you are left or right handed? What variations on this scenario might cause a top shooter to make such choices?

Doc Shapiro

We'll talk about dissecting stages and figuring out how to shoot them soon.  I have a bunch of material that I am working on for an article for the first W3G magazine. Some of that will go up first.

However, to whet your appetite, here's a key to figuring out how to shoot a stage.

The flow of the transitions should dictate the order of the guns (if that's left up to the shooter).  The layout of the stage has a lot to do with that.  Be flexible.  Be able to start with either revolver and keep track of it.

We'll get to specifics soon....

Just about anything would be helpful at this point.

I have shot handguns with great zeal most of my life, certainly all of my adult life and have put 10' of thousands of rounds down range.  I have qualified expert in the Practical Pistol Course since 85 but the shotgun is new and I have always been a poor rifle shot.

While I have, of course, shot single action revolvers, I have never had to shoot them for speed before.  Always wondered why I had that extra thumb ( the one on my other hand) until now.

Physical exercise, mental exercise relating to hand, arm strength and eye-hand coordination?

Spell out a few series of live fire practice drills, what do you do when you got to the practice range?

Anything you got to say Doc, I know I for one will listen to.

Thanks

SIR WILLIAM

I would like to see a variety of Q&A, a pocket pistol and derringer side match suggestion or three and some of the "I did it, you can too" experiences and opinions.  We get SO (too?) much information on gunsmith modified firearms and internal modifications.  I would enjoy reading about average shooters with EAA Bounty Hunter single actions and how a grip swap helped them control their firearm better with a increase in speed/accuracy.  IOW, basics to complex for beginners, seasoned shooters and old hands.  We can all contribute and learn in this way.

Doc Shapiro

Sir William, so right you are!  If you have something specific you are interested in, please post the question.  I'm sure one of the pards will have an answer for ya!

You were asking about a "I did it, you can too" experience.  This is from this past weekend at the Mason Dixon Stampede.  You can be quite competitive with 45's.  My 38's are in the shop and I was shootin a pair of Rugers in 45. A good friend lent me some ammo to use so I wouldn't have to ship.  I don't recall the exact load, but it was a 200gr bullet travelling around 800-850fps.  Certainly not a mousephart!  Anyway, I placed 14th overall and 6th in Traditional using 45's.  So, it can be done.  Just requires some practice and learning to drive the gun (will be explained in a future article, unless someone asks before I get to it  ;)).  One of the top 10 shooters was using a pair of Rugers that have had nothing done to them but springs replaced.

Doc, I'm responding from the viewpoint of these kind of folks:
  • New to the CAS Game
  • Those that want to Improve their Shooting Skills
  • Those that are New to Reloading
  • Those that are new to CAS City and want intelligent references for the above

Background:  When I read the Wire, there are too many posts from folks asking basic questons.  The other hand:  On CAS City and TFS, there are mature shooters and folks that know their subject matter.

Objective:  Build the Shooting Range with Sticky subject matter that is quantified good reference material to draw folks to this board.  Then if they have a sub question ... fine, ask it

Preliminary examples:  the link to all the SASS rule books, link to your videos, links on how to reload, tips/tricks, etc ... will be a source for dot #4

I'm apalled at the number of shooters that don't know what's in the rule books, the number that don't know the definition of transtion, those that want to fill a 45 Colt cartridge to the lip with smokeless powder, so on, so on, so on.  This is the reason for the response.

Folks want to be speed demons!  I ain't going to be in the elite (age degeneration-physically and mentally; just plain old age) but I've watched you videos at least 50 times and read the book twice. Been a great help, but still need to cut 10 seconds off each of my stages though.  So make it a Sticky and blow your own horn cause because many of the other elite want my 250 bucks and it only cost me 20 plus as many times as I want to click your videos. ;)

Race guns, here or in Gunsmithing?

SIR WILLIAM

Good points, John Boy.  I have currently no single actions. HORROR!  I am planning to switch to Bisleys soon.  I am planning to develop a BP arsenal too.  I am attempting to raise interest regionally in WASA.  I have a few Webleys, Enfields and S&W double action revolvers.  I have a 1911.  I just started a thread on a S&W M10.  There will be updates as I progress.  My hope is that I can spend only the purchase price and ammunition expenses.  If I have problems,  I will attempt repairs/parts replacements myself.  I will post all experiences, good or bad. It is my desire to show that money is not required to be competitive.  Doc made a reference to learning to "drive" the firearm.  Right on the 10 ring!  There are a few problems that demand a trip either back to the factory/importer or a genuine gunsmith. I am noting an increase in quality across the board though.  We IMNSHO, are responsible for this increase.  No manufacturer/importer wants to be "ripped" on the BBs.  They are getting better at quality because we voice our opinions and experiences.  Improvements are one thing, total rebuilds for reliability are another.  The newbies do ask a lot of questions.  I am glad.  That tells me that there is growth.  Growth is good.  I do suggest books/videos to newbies.  I recently posted that I feel gunrags are not worth buying.  Books, videos and ammunition are.  Watching, reading and practice are good things.

Doc Shapiro

Sir William, my reference to "driving the gun" had nothing to do with trips to the gunsmith and everything to do with shooting ::) - specifically about how you move the gun between shots and targets.  There will be an article about it as soon as I can figure out how to write it.  It's a tricky concept to get on paper and make simple.

SIR WILLIAM

I realized that.  I simply meant that instead of "getting a grip", many DO grab the checkbook.  A wise man onc said; A man has got to know his limitations.  LOL
