Howdy,
I am shooting a 50-70 with an oversize chamber and about .875 in. of free space.  I only want to shoot about 50 grains of black powder so I am using about 5/16 in. of fiber wads to take up space.  I am thinking of going to longer brass to position the bullet closer to the rifileing and this would involve using about 1.0 in of wads.  Has anyone had any problems with this length of spacers?

What is oversized about your chamber?
Just shoot Goex 1f in it. Fill the case so that  afully seated bullet will have firm contact with the powder and forget the filler hokeypokey nonsense.

Colt, I get the impression that you believe a normal 50-70 charge will ripe your shoulder off.  Not true.
You should follow Ranch 13's advice or dump the 50-70 and buy a 38-55.
Like they say ... Either run with the pack or stay in the kennel

Now, if you are bound and determined to use a filler ... use florist foam, the dense stuff that the florists use for wet flower arrangements.

BTW, your post should be in BROW - Buffalo Rifles of the West

I've actually loaded some historically correct 50-55 Sharps carbine rounds for a 50-70 conversion to see what happened. I honestly cannot remember what wads I used as spacers but I do remember that while recoil was diminished they didn't shoot worth a damn.  ;)
