Guys, I have a Uberti 50-95 made in 2008. The buttplate seems to be a kind of plastic material. It has the sliding door for inserting a take-down cleaning rod.  Any of you have the same rifle with a steel buttplate? Just wondering why they made it with a plastic buttplate.

What - Are you sure  ???  Did you check it with a magnet?  I have a .50-95 I bought directly from Taylors & Co. in November 2008 and it definately has a steel buttplate.  If it really is plastic, I would go back to importer ask for a steel replacement.

My Crappy has a case harden steel with a brass door. Uberti should have a better one I think.

My fault - it is steel. It had a plasticky sound to it when tapped but i have taken it off and it is definitely steel, as is the sliding door. Whew!

Glad to hear it is steel.  It should be noted that hardened rubber buttplates on Winchesters are period option for the 1886 on, at least.  I haven't come across anything about the 1876 and earlier, yet.

Mike Venturino mentions having owned an original 1886 and 1892 outfitted with such in "Shooting Lever Guns of the Old West".   Of course, with the 1886 it was about how the buttplate shattered on one particulary cold day in Montana when he used the rifle to keep from falling.
