My 14 year old son has to do anything I do , just from reading on these boards , I believe the ncows would not only allow him to participate , but actually teach him something . any thoughts?

My grandson has been shooting SASS matches with me for two years now.  Since we've become an NCOWS Posse, he's been joining me at that as well.  He seems to enjoy the NCOWS matches more.  He's 13 and really likes the Working Cowboy class, better than the Juniors.

Absolutely.

As an interesting sidebar, I was contacted last year by a gent from Montana who is working to establish guidelines and curriculum for 4-H Shooting Sports at the National level. He was inquiring whether NCOWS would allow him to incorporate some of our overall guidelines and youth program points into the National 4-H program. He indicated that they really liked NCOWS' commitment to history, authenticity and believed that this would allow them to easily and interestingly introduce additional American History and other educational aspects to their Shooting Sports curriculum.

Of course, we assured them that we whole-heartedly support 4-H and especially its Shooting Sports program and we would be proud to assist them in any way possible. He indicated that he was working as part of a committee to devbelop these national guidelines and they they would likely not be finished, adopted and circulated for a couple of years yet.

I thought you might be interested to know this as it seemed to be exactly what you were asking about.

Hope this helps answer your question.

At one time shooting was the American Sport. I have taught all four of my children how to shoot. Bought them their first gun. When they were old enough, I made sure they had and knew how to shoot a hand gun. Yes for fun and also to protect themself and their love ones. My Great Grand Dad said, "go armed, propaired, and ready to use your weapon, but make sure it is the last thing that you have to do". It was good advice. Let us not forget shooting is a good sport, but it carries a lot of responsibility. This is why programs such as four H are so valuable. But the greatest responsbility is yours DAD. TJ

I started him out shooting as soon as he could hold a rifle butt off the ground, he has a natural skill with firearms, he ahs been deer hunting since 8 years old , downed his 1st buck at age 9 and has filled his tags every year since. what he is not is an exceptional student , very bright but just skims by thinking that is good enough. He lives with his mother about 45 minutes away from me so i cant be there to be on him like I should be and it just isnt the same over the phone. With NCOWS hopefully he will gain interest in learning and research.

Nash, After rereading my post. I want you to know, when I said Dad I was not singling you out. I was refering to Dad's in general. As Dad's we do the best we can with our children. Sounds like yours is all boy and I know you love and are proud of him. And well you should be. Spend all the time with him that you can. It was hard with my children, over 38 years of Southern 21 day swing shifts. Leaves a lot of ball games, plays, and such that you can't attend. Made the time I could spend with them even more special. Take care and enjoy shooting NCOWS or SASS with him. TJ
