Howdy Pards,
I know there are a lot of good gun smiths on here, and I am wanting someone to take my Brand new 51 Navy US Marshalls in 44 cal , and convert them to gated cartidge guns, You can Go to Calbela's and look them up, I believe they are piette's? From what I have read, when they are down, you have to trim down 45 Colt Brass, or the Russian Brass?
If anyone has done this work, and wants to do mine, pm me with a price! I am just not a big Cap and Ball shooter.
Thanks for taking the time to read!

If that is what it is called, the answer is yes, I would call it making it deeper. I know that the 45Colt is a big case. I would only be shooting light loads, so If a person had to trim a lot off, it wouldn't be a big deal.
I hope this helps?

Professor Marvel

Greetings Herr Lunger -

Of the many services available, River Junction offers the Kirst
gated converter and a fellow affiilated with them is now offering a porting service as well.
At the very least, the pictures and descriptions are worth a look:

And here is their porting service:

Other smith's who can handle the job are certain to jump in shortly :-)

Wild Bill Blackerby

Howdy Ace,

I don't know where you're situated but my 'smith Happy Trails is the man for the job.
His site & contact info is here : http://thesmithshop.com/

A few years back Hap converted my '51 Navies to cartridge and the boys are slick and do not fail me.  There were some issues with the conversion parts we had gotten but Hap's an "ol time type" smith - and he actually was converting guns before there were kits. ;)

You can see mine here: http://news.webshots.com/album/550693487fflGtc
If y'all have any questions feel free to e-mail me.

Professor, Thanks for the info, I bookmarked it, I have been building old junk guns for several years, but since these were New, I was thinking of having someone else do them.

Wild Bill, Your guns look great, did the guy use your cylinders and turn them down? I have seen that done. I am going to get a hold of that Gun Smith, and talk to him! I would prefer to have my cylinders turned down, and the ring added, and I could do my own porting! I am building 3 single shot rifles right now, but I don't trust my self, to turm those cylinders!!
I do that you!
i thank both of you guys a lot!

Make sure that the frame is not plated brass.  I ran into that problem with Cabela's plated 1860's.
