Hello everyone,I found this great website and would like to know if anyone here would have any information on the 1st Reg.Cherokee Mounted Volunteers C.S.A. I'm researching a Pvt.Leonard Wood,Co.G and Pvt.Charles Hicks,Pvt John Hicks Co.I Pvt Looney Hicks Co.E Nathan Hicks,Co.I and Rufus Hicks Co.I.Lt. John l. Kell.Capt.H.G. Kind. It may be a longshot but I thought I'd give it a try. There were many American Indians on this roster from the same Regiment and different companies.Namely, Pvt.Daniel Choowalooga Co. H,Sgt.Choo-wa-looky, Co.F Pvt.Choon Seye. I would like to know why they were in Mason Co.West Virginia and what brigade they could have been attached to. I have not found thier Regimental history thus far.Does anyone know of any books on the subject.Thank-you everyone.

See if you can find a copy of the Osprey Book "The American Civil War in the Indian Territory". It is a fairly new book (2006) and a lot of folks haven't heard of it.

It is a great book and may have the information you are looking for. Even if it does not, it has a lot of source material references on the different tribes (including the Cherokee) and their involvement in the war.

It has a lot of good photos and illustrations that show the proper equipment used during the conflict. Hope this will help you out.

I am Ottawa Indian but I do a mounted Cherokee Cavalry Troop as one of my NCOWS impressions, below is a photo.

Warhorse,

Though I haven't seen it, I will second the book OCB mentioned just because he mentioned it.  The fellah is a veritable goldmine of information....

That said, though, it is possible that the Cherokee Confederate unit(s) you're seeking may have been formed back East rather than in Indian Territory.  I learned this when I was researching Confederate Indian artillery units.  In honor of my father's military service in WWII, "Daniel" served with an Artillery outfit.

Though the Civil War occurred nearly 30 years AFTER the Indian Removal in the 1830s, there were still a fairly large number of the so-called Five Civilized Tribes left in what became the Confederate States of America.  (Choctaw, Chickasaw, Cherokee, Creek, and "Seminole.")  Many, if not most, of them sided with the Confederacy -- not because they were pro-Confederate, mind you, but because they were staunchly ANTI-Jackson (and the horse he rode up on, etc, etc.).

If you don't find what you're looking for in OCB's book, and if you're sure the troopers you mentioned were Cherokee, you might start looking for Confederate NDN units that were formed in the Carolinas, east Tennessee, etc.  To my ears, for what that's worth, the names you mentioned might  be Muscogee (Creek) names.  In that case, expand your search southward into Alabama and Georgia.

Hope this helps!

Thank-you all so much for the information. I will find the book.Great picture Ottawa Creek Bill.Thank-you for you service to our country. Happy Trails Daniel Nighteyes. Georgia or Alabama may be a start.I be;ieve the Hicks I mentioned were decendants of Pewed Hicks b.1715 and b.1720 Mary Temperance Dumas they were born in Surry co.Va. Nancy Hicks b.1756 and Bailey Woods,b.1753. So it could be reasonable they migrated to Georgia. Leonard Woods is the fellow I am researching. He is buried in Mason Co.Wva. a Confederate soldier that was buried by his friends in his unit when he fell sick and died.I feel that any soldier that dies serving should get a proper tombstone.I also believe he was related to the other men in his unit.I just have to put the puzzel together. Thanks again.
