Howdy all!

How would you go about adjusting a pattern to accommodate target sights, or would you even need to at all?

You can do it two ways that I know of if you want to stay with the western look, one is make your pattern so that the top of the bucket lays under your sights, the other is if you're looking for a Slim Jim type holster, is to cut the center section out where the sight comes into contact with the top of the bucket, but just that area where the sight is, like a Frank James holster, you could also make a flap over holster, if you want to keep it really safe and clean.
I made a cross draw rig for my Ruger flat top Black Hawk, this is a style I like real well while hunting or just carrying, here's a picture of the one I made. Hope this helped.

Target sights would also have a taller front sight. As long as the pattern isn't too tight, the pattern should work fine with wet molding.

Sam,

What type of gun are you asking about....single action?? or double action revolver? or maybe an automatic?

The rear sight needs a welt but the pattern can stay the same. Make the welt the same thickness as the sight is tall and find to best location for the welt to ride the frame and adjust it's depth to that. In this picture you can see where the rear sight touches but the welt is down in the holster to ride against the flat part of the frame .

This really protects the sight but also keeps the sight from damaging the holster

one thing i did to help allow for the sights on a friends 1911 is tape a dowel rod right behind the front sight to the rear sight on top of the slide.

then wet mold the holster to the handgun with the dowel rod in place.

this helped me form the leather to the sights on the gun and allowed it to holster easier while maintaining a tight fit around the rest of the handgun.

this may work for all guns as long as you get a dowel rod that is same size as the sights you are adjusting to.
