I always thought odd numbers look more natural, but, each to his own. I like perfect symmetry as well.

I usually do odd numbers because it makes the piece more interesting. This isn't a hard and fast rule, though, because some designs just can't be asymmetrical.

To me it all depends on the shape of the area I am working on.
As long as it looks balanced.

Howdy Cowboy 316,
I have always liked the wild rose design ever since I was a pup. On a design such as this rectangle I prefer bi-lateral symmetry. Maybe even simple symemetry. Simple symmetry is when a design looks like it is perfectly symmetrical at first but as you look at it and study it, it becomes apparent that it is not really perfectly symmetrical. This design is simple symmetry if you would drop the rose on the bottom right down just a bit. I think you have looked at quite a bit of Sheridan work. It tends to be of simple symmetry.
Bi-lateral symmetry differs from simple symmetry in that bi-lateral symmetry is a perfect reflection of what is on one side of the design if you drew a line right smack dab down the middle and folded it onto itself. An example in nature of simple symmetry is everyone's face.  ;D Even faces that look perfectly symmetrical are not in actuality. If you put a mirror edge along the center axis of a human face, the reflection would complete a bi-lateral symmetrical design. There is no perfectly symmetrical shapes in God's whole creation. At least if there is, I have never seen it. Design lesson for the day. :-\
I am usually not this long winded,
