I am just now getting into reloading (.45 colt is just too darn expensive ;D) and I was looking for good places to get brass or bullets from.

I tried places like Midway, Gunbroker, etc but I have not been able to locate much....esp at decent prices. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Powders also if you know of any good places that may not be mainstream......at least for someone starting out.

Sorry if this is in the wrong section.......be nice to have a reloading section.

Greetings Monsieur Guns -

> I am just now getting into reloading

I fear that your timing is, how can I put it, less than optimal. Due to the unfortunate series of global events you will find it difficult to find any components at all, let alone at decent prices. If you were to search this forum, the official sass forum, and the boolit casting forum  for the topic "primers", for example , you will find this tale of woe has hit the entire country since last fall.

All one can advise is to make yourself a list of vendors, and call them daily. Literally.
When a vendor does recieve a shipment of components, they sell out quite rapidly.

Or one can sit tight and wait it out, as this feeding frenzy is clearly going to be another short-lived phenominon.

Or, one can invest in a good set of cap and ball revolvers, as goex, pyrodex, and caps seems to be available! IN fact my good friend Singing Bear is selling off a set of ASM 1860's over here:

Thanks. I am aware of the timing and how most things sell out quick. I was able to get me some large pistol primers the other day. I am keeping taps on everyone locally and just trying to find things here and there. I have a few Cap and Ball guns. They are a blast to shoot.

An unusual place where I got a LOT of my 45 brass, was at a large regional SASS match that did not allow brass pickup. At the one I go to, the Boy Scouts pick up  the brass, sort it, and sell it for a small price, with the proceeds going to them. I bought a lot of 45 brass that way at 10 bucks/100 or so.
There will be people that say I am buying junk brass, but it hasnt proved to be the case. I might throw away 5 rounds out of a bag or 2 due to splits. The rest all seems good.

As far as powder, get some black powder from Powder Inc, the online powder source. Great prices, and hazmat is figured in to the price, so no suprises.

If you want smokeless, I use Trailboss, and buy it in the big jug (5# or so). The last jug I bought has lasted me over a year of shoots, and I still have some in the jug. Try your small shops, but Midway or Natchez shooting supply are probably your best bets.

Primers, um, well, I cant help ya there. I am in need as well.

Good luck, Joey.

Joey, if you have the primers, that's the main thing that's harder to find these days, so you're a step ahead.  For smokeless, I like Clays, Tightgroup, and Trailboss.  There are others that work well, too, mainly use fast powders for what we do.  I'd recommend buying powder, primers, and lead locally whenever possible just because of hazmat costs on shipping, and the weight of the lead.  Starline is always a good bet and you can order direct from them.  45 Colt is $89 / 500.  Brass for CAS usually lasts a really long time.  If there is a shooting range near you check to see if they sell fired brass.

Hey Joey, I bet you wish you hadn't thrown away all that brass at previous comps, now!!

Dalton, is that right, they don't allow you to pick up your own brass????
I'm very much afraid the organisers would get short shrift if they tried to steal my brass at the prices we have to pay!
I wouldn't begrudge the Boy Scouts their commission, if it came back sorted into headstamp batches and cleaned!!

I guess thats just the Scotsman in me.

Yes, some of the larger matches will not allow brass pickup to make things go faster. Some people say that they take their very very bad brass to be lost, while others take brand new, so that it is reliable at a big shoot. There is a little bit of controversy over the whole thing, but.....
I have never sorted my brass by headstamp, and have never had a problem, other than the occasional one with a slightly larger diameter rim making the reloader fumble.

I always come back with enough good brass to make it well worth the 10 bucks/100 I donate to the scouts.

Well I have always collected most of my brass for anything I shoot. I just dont have a lot of .45 colt brass. I have only shot a few boxes of that. Im not set in the primer dept. but I have enough to get started and have some fun with.

Thanks for the leads and pointers guys.
