Drydock

Been off line for a few days while my DSL account set up.

Ennyways, picked up a dandy Krag last week.  Show prices have gotten a LOT better lately, go figger.  A lovely unaltered 100% matching Infantry Rifle.  Condition very good to excellent, shiny bore, sharp rifling, M1898 made in 1901 with the M1901 sights.  Now I need a sling and a Bayonet.  Any suggestions?

Sgt. DD,

Go to the Splendid Little War forum and look under the heading for equipment and arms of the span-am war. They have a good grasp on the pc equipment there and are very helpful. Try this web address:

You can buy a replica Leather Sling and replica Dust Cover from S&S Firearms.

They also have a replica Muzzle Protector - a small brass device that snaps over the muzzle and front sight, as well as the replica three-piece Cleaning Rod.

Original Oil Bottles are common - original cleaning rods aren't.

No one makes a replica Krag Tool - the one with the short punch pin.

As to the Bayonet and Scabbard - given the date of manufacture of your Krag, any post Spanish-American War-dated bayonet will bring less than a war-dated one, and the best overall selection will be found on ebay.

Good Luck!

Glad to see someone else is shootin a full length Krag!

I had thought briefly about using a carbine seeing how they handle quicker on close up multiple targets, but I am Infantry and a carbine wouldn't be right. I have no idea if a short gun would even be an advantage because I don't really know the course of fire or ranges to the targets.

Drydock

I have both.  IMHO the rifle is slower to the initial target, but faster to cycle, as the long barrel and greater weight help keep the weapon stable as you cycle the bolt.  I'd have to say it's a wash.  Not enough difference to worry about.  I can say the rifle is a beautifuly balanced weapon, someone put a lot of engineering thought into it, it manuvers surprisingly easy.  The 03 feels chunky and clunky in comparison.

Sarge, I have a bayonet for a Krag. Don't know what model, but it's in pretty good shape.  The sheath is missing the belt hanger gizmo.

E-mail me (gun.slick@juno.com) if you're interested. I figure it'll cost maybe $10.00 to mail it.  If you want it, it's yours.

Hello!
If you need a sling, I personally would go with the one frome Eureka Arsenal.  It's quite a lot better than the Krag sling I got from S & S.  Don't get me wrong, I love S & S for parts, but the fact is the Eureka Arsenal sling is better quality.  (Yes, I've owned both.)  For what it's worth!
