Hi,

I have this 1/2 gallon of vinagaroon that I am dying to try ...

Does anyone have the recipe for the soda wash that one is supposed to apply afterwards?

And leave it in there how long?

Does it need to be brushed down? Skidmored?

You can tell I am really new to this ...

Thanks!

For the deepest black, apply a bath of strong black tea first (this increase the tannins) and let it soak in good, then apply a generous amount of the vinegar black - either dip in the vinegar black or apply liberally with a sponge or cloth.
If dipped remove and in either case let the leather set for about a half hour and then rinse with a mix of baking soda and warm water, about a 1/8 cup soda to a half gallon of water, apply  and let set for a minute - too long and you can alkali burn the leather - then rinse off thoroughly with clean, clear water.
While the leather is still damp apply a light coat or two of your favorite saddle oil to BOTH sides. Once dry add more oil if need be and then top coat as normal with your choice.

Chuck, your method worked again, I'm making a new rig right now, and was going to use Vinegaroon, and remembered your suggestion of giving your leather a BLACK TEA bath before using the vinegaroon, well it worked great, I got a very very deep black, and after the baking soda bath it was even a deeper black, I cant wait for it all to dry, so I can put the oil on, it should be something to look at, you just can't get this kind of black any where but from vinegaroon and the method of using it. ;D

Thanks for the heads up ;) :D ;D

I didn't know about the black tea treatment when I did my holsters . . . but will certainly do it next time.  I also heard somewhere that you were supposed to apply a little "Jack Daniels" . . . . oh . . . wait a minute!  You're supposed to sip the Jack Daniels while you're a doin" the dying process!  Sorry 'bout that!   ;D

For a minute there, I thought we were going to have to call you to task for wasting good Jack. ;D
