My buddy had a successful Colorado Elk hunt this last year and he brought home the antlers... They were decent, but not worthy of the expense to have them dropped off at the taxidermist's shop... so he called me and asked if I could use a part of the antlers to make him a handle for a knife... He wanted a large bowie/fighting knife... So I told him I would try.... I ordered a blade and built the knife several months ago and just got around to getting the sheath put together today...... I think it turned out ok... I haven't made a knife sheath in a while and I know my basket weave skills need more practice.... The pictures are after the first coat of neatsfoot oil. I plan on giving it a chance to sun-bath tomorrow....

MT, that is a great sheath and the knife is beautiful I love the lines of it. The thing just works man, your buddy should be mighty proud of that one.

Post another pic of the sheath after you finish the burnishing and the sunbathing . It is looking real good pard.

That looks really good, Tac. Both the knife and the sheath are fine work. The antler looks very comfortable to hold. Good work, pard

Thanks for all the kind words pards.... I know I am my most observant critic and I tend to be over critical of my own work most times. Looking at this knife and sheath, I notice the little details that are not 100% perfect. Most people would never see some of these things or notice them like I do anyway.... I had fun with this project. Not sure which was more fun, the knife or the sheath (I think the sheath, mostly because I got to put my new sewing machine to use  ;D )

I will get it to my pard next week and see what he thinks. I will get some more pictures once the sheath is finished completely.

It looks really nice and the oil will only improve it with time.  I do have one question though, did you get to keep the rest of his horn?

santee

Sweet! I agree about adding a little oil and maybe throwing it in the sun for a day.
