Trail Boss and .45 Colt 200 grainers

What has been your experiences with 6.0 grs. of Trailboss with a 200 grain bullet in .45 Colt?

I loaded some like this for a friend to shoot out of a Rossi 92 with a 20 inch barrel he said they shoot fine and accuracy was ok

I'm also at 5.8 grains of Trail Boss with a 200 grain bullet and it works just fine.

Not meaning to criticize, but when I start a new load, I load batches of ten in increments of 0.1grains and go and shoot them to find the load that groups best and suits that particular gun.
I have found that pistols and rifles can be as individual as people and only a certain combination of components will work best in that weapon.
I would never take one persons favorite load as gospel but might use it as a starting point for further development.

The load I worked up for mine was just a throw together load to shoot targets and varmints around my buddies farm. I just went with Hogdon's load recommendation

I actually picked 6.0 grains because it was middle of the road, and would rather have just a little umhp to them as oppose to a mouse fart load. I've shot some 250 grainers loaded on the low end with Unique, and those scared me.

Hi there Rawhide, I wasn't meaning to criticize, just explaining the way I do it.

I agree that underloading can be as bad as overloads, but I had to Google "Trailboss" as it is not a powder that I use.

According to their website, and due to the form and shape of the powder, and the way it is meant to perform, you can fill the case without trepidation.

They also give various loading data for most pistol calibers, if you wish to visit the site.

That is incorrect. It is true that Trailboss was designed to take up space in large capacity cartridges like 45 Colt, to burn more efficiently than many other powders that don't bulk up as much, but nowhere does it say to fill the case. Maximum loads must be observed.

Yessirree!!! While it is bulky, TB is a very fast powder and gets plenty ornery if pushed too hard.

If you shoot 6gr. of TrailBoss with a 200gr. boolit...no one will ever accuse you of shooting a mouse fart load. It will go BOOM !!!! packs plenty of oomph too.

Correct Jack & Driftwood, that is why I pointed out the reloading data on the website.
It actually shows a typical load, which is well up the case, and what happens if it is double loaded, powder all over the bench!!
Quite an interesting read and I may well see if I can source some in the UK as I am trying to find a lighter load for my .44 Marlin without getting to the point of too light and auto acceleration (BOOM).

I too use 6 grains for my 200's and have not had any problems, I started reloading 2 years ago and have used nothing but Trail Boss, and 6 grains.. Like the sound and feel when fried...

I shot 5.8 Gr. Trailboss behind a 200 gr. for a while. It was a strong load, but it gave nasty cases. I loaded some 250gr. and got much cleaner cases. With either load, no one will accuse you of being a 'Gamer'. The 250s provide enough pressure to expand the cases to fill the cyl. and not let blowback around the case...I've since moved on to shooting 250s with Clays. It's even cleaner.

I had some time playing with trailboss in summer of 08. I had some very flat primers at the 6gr range with the 250 gr bullets. Trailboss was made to fill the case in volume so that dbl loads were not possible. I think that is what Angel Eyes read and didn't relay correct. I would not under any means want to shoot a full case in my hands or guns! I think that Clays is a better powder and it is not case sensitive.
