Alias vs real names

When the GAF was first created, we drew our iniital membership from SASS.  SASS required the use of an alias and we carried on that tradition.

As we grew, we recruited members who were not in SASS and did not have or want to use an alias (as opposed to an on-screen name.

After due consideration, to include discussions with the GAF staff, the GAF will encourage our members to use their real names.  Some of our members have already begun to do so.  However, everyone has the option of using whatever name they wish in The Barracks.

Sir:
I take keyboard in hand to reply to your communication of this P.M., ultimo.  What happens if you've been called by your alias so often, and answer the phone that way (same name as my business), i.e., "Good afternoon, Trailrider! This is Jim, may I help you?" so that you think of yourself as "Trailrider"???

The other thing about using your alias on the 'Net is that it keeps you somewhat annonymous, in case there are miscreants lurking.  Of course, if one sends an e-mail, at least in my case, you find out my name anyway...

I guess I was smart to use my real name as my CAS alias after all!  ;D

Dr. Bob

Well, I started with my real name and it go changed sometime along the way.  Since my CAS City replies have both my alias and my real name, I guess that it doesn't matter much here in the Barracks! :o ;D

As I said, this is an option.  Basically, what we are saying is that in GAF you do not have to go by an alias if you do not want to.

I go by both, both within and without GAF, SASS, NCOWS.

As a LEO, I was always know by my first two initals,  J R, because of my nametag on my uniform. I'm sure there were a lot of folks that never knew me by anything else.  I was born and raised in Texas, and chose Law Enforcement as my professions. Law officers were refered to as "Lawdogs".  It seemed to be a good alias for me for almost 10 years now.

Feel free to list mine as Glen "Delmonico" Carman.  Folks know me by both, in fact my boss put "Glen Carman aka Delmonico" on my buzzness card for work.

Hi Jim /Trailrider

I can relate to thinking of your alias as your name. A couple of weeks ago I took the boys basketball team to the sub district tournament. We got there early and while I was waiting in the stands before most of the fans got there, there was a group of boys from another town playing with their cell phones. I thought I overheard one of them say something about "pitspitr" so I started listening closer. Appearantly they were trying to share ringtones via bluetooth and they were close enough to be finding my phone.

Sometimes being annonymous on the 'net can be a bad thing as people sometimes say things they wouldn't if they were face to face.

Reinactors/Living Historians typically don't use an alias and since I wasn't a CAS shooter at the time that I joined the Grand Army I didn't have one. When I registered on The Frontier Spot I used "Pitspitr" as my on line name because that was what I used on the other boards I frequented. When I eventually joined SASS I selected "Pitspitr" as my alias because I resoned that most of the CAS shooters I knew on the TFS and here on CASCity knew me by that name. And guess what. I got my first choice in aliases. Imagine that ::) :D

When it comes to what other GAF members call me, I guess I don't care. I'll answer to either/or, or both.
