Thanks Dalton, for the patterns!! Been busy the last few days and have turned out my first lined holsters using a pattern that Dalton sent me for a Starr revolver. Turns out that the pattern fit my OM Vaqueros with 7 1/2" barrels perfectly. Everything was made using 6-7 oz. veg tan leather I bought off Ebay. Go figure. Dyed the holsters and powder flask holster with Tandy EcoFlow Midnight Black. Never again. Like the Fiebings Spirit based MUCH better. anyway, two coats of dye, two coats of Neutral shoe polish and good soaking rubdown inside and out with EVOO.

Well JD,

First, let me make it clear that I epitomize the inexperienced here, so take whatever I say with a healthy grain of salt. Anyway, the Tandy dye is thick, like pudding. I first tried thinning some with Denatured Alcohol, but tests on scraps showed it did not color that well. It is messy to use to me. The Fiebings spirit-based dye seems to penetrate deeper and faster. My 0.02 cents anyway.

Pudding is a good discription Clint. I've tried that, plus the Fiebbings USMC black, and their Pro Oil Dye. It seemed to me like it would take a whole lot of the Tandy product to get the job done.

I did notice that each product gave a somewhat different look of black. So far I've only dyed small pieces to test the coloring. One other thing I noticed is that the Tandy dye didn't seem to dry out the leather like the other two.

I guess I'm going to have to try to produce some Vinegaroon to see how that works.

A nice tip I learned awhile back on dyeing with the USMC Black. Use the dark blue dye first, then give it a coat of black after that. Ends up with a deep pretty and EVEN black color.

Very nice rig, PC. I like the graceful lines with those pistols in them. You got a good black with that dye, or at least so it looks in the pics. Good job.

Good looking rig Preacher. I don't think a dye has ever been invented that works exactly like you want it to. That is why you hear so many ways to dye something from the guys on here. It seems to be a matter of puttin' stuff together until you find what works for you. Or what you can live with

That's a good tip Dalton. I tried putting a wash, if you will, on a piece I'm going to dye black. I used Ox Blood, because the guy wants black, but with a redish tint to it. He's happy with the look, so all's well.

I plan on doing my next CAS rig in black, so trying Navy blue first works.
