knucklehead

holsters look great JD.

wish i would of takin a pic of my first holster. that way i can look back and laugh at it, and see how much i improved.

my first holster was designed for my ruger security six but it didnt fit. i couldn't even fit a ruger 22/45 into the holster.
think it shurnk when i dyed it. also i put way too much neatsfoot oil on it and the belt too.
the belt did fit me but the bullets didnt stay in the loops at all either.
i learned alot on my first holster and belt.

whatever color you decide to use it will be great.
i for one vote for the antique dye. i have tried the paste but prefer the jell style.
with the jell style you put it on the leather very heavy like when you stain the wood. let it sit for about a min then using paper towels wipe off the excess. then rub the project down with a damp sponge till you get the look you want and let dry.

J D, nice job on the carving and on your holsters, I like the Olive Oil/ Sun color, but I dye also with limited success. This is a rig I recently finished for Cowboy Fast Draw. It has 3 coats of EVOO and 1 coat of Aussie wax plus 3 days in the sun. I'll still give it more sun   but it's winter here in Michigan and I'm not sun if it will tan as Fast as summer. Nice job, and keep up the good work!

Howdy Pokey

Nice Rig Pard, I did my Jesse James rig this way, I didn't use the Aussie wax, but I did use Skidmores leather cream, as a final coat after EVOO, this combination gives your leather a nice glow and tone when put in the sun between EVOO coats. Thanks for sharing, and it is good to have you with us.

Ten Wolves, thanks for the kind words, I've visited this site for almost a year and alot of you leathercrafters seem to like

the Skidmores Cream for a final finish, guess I'll just have to order some up and try it,  I haven't found any around here.

Well like I said before it is great to have you join us, I think you have a lot to add to the forum, you do nice work. I've been using the Skidmores for a few years now, Cowboy WC, turned me on to it, and I've been using it ever since, it isn't easy to fine everywhere, but there nice people to order from, I get mine from WC, but have told a lot of pards about it so just go to there web site, you want there leather cream, but they have a lot of other good products too, here's the site.  www.skidmores.com

I think once you try it you will love this stuff  ;D

JD, my limited experience tells me that Fiebing's dyes are VERY strong. You can dilute them way down.

The back side of the stitching is atrocious. I've got to figure out some different ways to approach this part of the job. It's so bad I wouldn't even take a picture of it!
My first one was like that, and I'm sure everyone's got a similar story. Getting the first one sewn is a hurdle. Now you know what to expect from the process, and you can tweak it. Congrats on a super job!!!!!

Looking good JD mighty fine leather work.

Thanks Santee and Wiley, I appreciate the encouragement.

Kuncklehead, thanks for the antique gel idea. I'm not aware of that product, so I'll have to check it out.

I used the paste on the belt after some EVOO and Lexol, and it's doing what I want it to. This isn't the color I thought it would be, but I think it will be OK. I need to let it dry some more, and the holsters too, before doing anything else to them.

You know what the weather is like here, (39, heavy overcast, rain/snow predicted) so I don't know if we're ever going to get any sun :-[

I'm going to work on basket stamping my first belt today. I've cut a few out and put buckles on them, but no carving or stamping, other than the gun belt that's still in progress.

Thanks one more time everyone! JD
