Looking for a tall boot ideas or something a stage coach drive would be wearing in the Lake Tahoe Donner Pass area in the 1880's, as my relative owned and ran a stage line until the railroad put him out of business.  I'm thinking he would not be dressed fancy but tall boots would give some protection from the weather.  Do you think he would be wearing chaps or can I skip those and save some money?  I also need sources for whatever footwear recommended.  Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

French Sage,

Lace up ropers might be a good solution to your footwear problem.  Chaps are to protect your legs when riding a horse through brush and protect your pants.  Won't need them.

The Old West store is a good place to start. Glen and Terry are good friends of mine and they can answer your questions and fit you in period clothing, especially hats and boots.  Tell them that Texas Lawdog said Hi.

If you want some really tall boots, check out the renaissance faire vendors: over the knee fold over tops like Custer and Cody wore on occasion, kind of like the three musketeers wore in movies.
