My Father in law's old Spencer Carbine - PARTS NEEDED *** Photos Added ***

Hello,

Going to try and  fix this gun up for my father in law, and I have a few questions.

I was wondering who sells the parts that are listed in the pdf parts list for the Spencer on this site?

I see Taylor's (http://www.taylorsfirearms.com) as a "lock complete" manufactured by Armi sport, listed for sale on their web site. I'm wondering if that is what I need to make this gun "whole" again. I am going to get in touch with them and see if I might be able to take the rifle over there and find out for sure, as I don't live too far from them. I'm not sure if these new parts are compatible with the old guns.

I see also that they sell new complete Spencers . I think they are also from Armi Sport. Are these of good quality? They are offered in 56-50, 45 Schofield and 44-40. Which shell is the most readily available/economical to shoot?

I'd give Dixie Gunworks a try, they did have quite a collection of original parts.  You might also check S&S, and Romano Rifles to see if they by chance have a lock.  Centerfire breechblocks are available from several suppliers, Dixie, Buffalo Arms, S&S, etc. 

Whether or not the Armi Sport parts will fit, I do not know.  At the least, you could try them and if they did not fit, maybe they will let you return them-- that I would find out in advance.

Armi sport Spencers are well made, reliable guns.  The 56-50 is the most expensive of the calibers available, but in my opinion is the correct caliber available and the most fun to shoot.

Try this guy he handles only old original gun parts---ed nicely 2645 southern hills rd , york ,pa 17403. The spelling of his last name may be wrong but everything els is right.

Much thanks to all who replied, now I have some leads to go on. I sent an email to Taylor's but haven't heard back, think I'll call them tomorrow.

I may look into buying an Armi Sport, and I'd like to have the 50. Need to find the money first

i just tryed a armi sports lock on a original berncide 1865 spencer and it fits lick a glove, however you will need a original front lock screw and a armi sports back lock screw,that is presuming 1865s and 1860 lockes are interchangeble ,i think they are but am not positive

Thank you, Herbert, for that information.  Looks like that may be my first thing to do, if I cannot find original parts. Original parts are not absolutely critical for me, but it would be nice if I could find them.

Time to get back to lookin'.

Update: Well, went over to Taylor's Firearms, really nice folks. Tried an Armi Sport lock in the old rifle, but no go. There is a pin through the bridle part that was hitting on the feed tube. The gunsmith there said the pin was different on the new locks to keep the bridle from moving around as much. I checked an outfit he recommended to me, Lodgewood Manufacturing in WIsconsin, but they didn't have any locks. Going to write that fellow up in PA, maybe he's got something that'll work.
