I have a jar with all my left over small amounts of dye in it. I run a bottle down and pour the remainder in that jar. The color is a grab bag but only once did I put anything in that didn't mix properly. I just used it anyway and the odd drops eventually disappeared. It always colors evenly and if it gets too dark, I mix some of it with alcohol for a project then pour the remainder in the jar again.

Considering Chuck uses coffee to some amazing effects, I honestly think that is proof there are no hard and fast rules with regards to what you can and cannot do with regards to finishing.

You only have a set of actions, and reactions. Put this on, get this out. Put that on, get something else out.

Just like art. Although all my art teachers told me not to do this or that because it wasn't done, I did it anyway, and always found a way to make it work. When you throw the "rules" out the window, you can begin to get some amazing and neat pieces.

As long as there is structural integrity to the piece afterwards, what's the harm?
Just because you CAN ride the hide off a horse, doesn't mean you should.
