I new here but have been reading a lot of post about the 76. I have looked at a uberti 76 from Taylors at a local gun shop. I like what I seen but I've read that there have been problems with some of the 76's. I don't want to shell out $1150 + uncle sams share for a problem gun. I can look the gun over good befor I buy so what should I be looking for in problems. I plan on getting it 45/60 also. What are the specs on 45/60 cartridge compared to 45/70 mostly looking for oal and rim thickness. Also what have you all had luck with in boolits. I can cast my own so I would like to get a mold. Haven't made up my mind about black or maybe 777 for pushing lead.  Also nice buck Rowdy. Where do you reside in Kentucky? I shot an * point in Casey co. this past season. Thanks for all the help.

Curdog,

I can only speak about my Taylor's Uberti 76.  I bought mine directly from Taylors back in November.  I drove to their shop in Winchester because I wanted to look over their stock and talk with the folks there.  All the rifles I looked at were beautiful.  I ended up taking home a .50-95.  After I got home I gave it a closer close look, pulled the sideplates off and looked inside.  I was pleasantly surprised how nice it looked on the inside.  Nice machining, no metal scraps laying around, good fit.  When I swabbed the bore I found it dirty with smokeless powder residue, which at first I was a little perturbed about.  But then I remembered hearing that Taylors test fires each rifle before selling it to make sure they are good to go.  As a final safety and functionality test, I consider this a a good thing and was glad they did it.

The folks at Taylors were really friendly and helpful too.

The Uberti is more expensive than a Chappy.  There are many good Chappys out there, but quite a few lemons also.  No doubt ther are some Uberti lemons too.  But I think they are both improving lately.  For my money, I'm glad I spent the extra cash on a Uberti.

I have the Uberti (Cimarron) 1876 in 45-75.  I love it.  It functions smoothly, accurately and looks outstanding.  I do not like the heavy trigger pull, and I intend to rectify that soon, but otherwise a wonderful rifle.  I am very happy with it.

I have a cimarron 45-75, love it. put a few hours in it, polished parts, trigger pull, ect. trigger pull is now 3# crisp. Oly thing I know is if i chamber a reformed 348 and dont fire it, sometimes it sticks.

I have a Chaparral and a Uberti/Cimarron ? when I first got the Chappy yes it had trouble and they fixed it .
As far as the Uberti's , the Cimarron  no problem's and the Taylor I did a review on also no problems . I'm not saying there are no problems with Uberti's but I haven't had any problem with them .
Now as far as my hunting I am originally from Webster County and that is where I hunt ,  mostly down on Deer Creek on  my brothers
farm . Hope to shoot a Turkey hunting video there this Spring . And yes it will be a Vintage Turkey Hunt .

Curdog,
I bought a Cimarron/Uberti in 45-60 about a year and a half ago and am extremely happy with it.  I did take mine apart as soon as I got it and smooth up all the innards and polished the sear and the notch in the hammer to make the trigger pull about 4 lbs.  I tried trimming 45-70 cases to 1.88 " but the Uberti likes a rim thickness of no more than .062 " and since I do not have any way of thining the rims I ended up buying cases from Buffalo Arms.  I removed the rear sight and put on a Marbles tang sight (I used one for the 1873 with a long staft since it gives more room for my thumb) and replaced the front sight with a better bead.  I bought CH dies and they work great.  I am currently shooting bullets from the RCBS 45-300 GC mould.  I am most interested in long range (up to 300 meters) accuracy and I have developed some good loads with that passing fad powder.  I have posted pictures and comments on the thread called "Smokeless in Replicas" or something like that.  My eyes are getting pretty bad but I can still shoot sub 2" groups at 50 yards and not much more than that at 100 yards.  I don't think you will be unhappy with a Uberti.

Do yourself a favor and check out CDNN, its an outfit in Texas that sells all the calibers of the 1876 for $699. Best price Ive found, and of the two Chaparrals I bought from them, not a problem 1. Have one in 40-60 and one in 50-95. I think theyre website is CDNN.com, but if its not, just google them. Good luck!!
