I've been going back and forth between a colt and a remington C&B.
I think it's down to the 1861 navy. It has the colt lines I like and the smaller cal.
The prices aren't much diference,
Midway USA---Uberti---$290
Cabelas--------Peita------$299
So it comes down to being able to return if there is a problem.

I would like to know what you think? The Uberti isn't realy any better then the Peita?
[these will be converted at a later date]
Thanks

Doc O

I just got back from shooting a friends Pietta 1851 navy.
It shot very well, cycled good with no problems. Fun gun.

I have never returned anything to Midway so I don't know how easy they are to get along with.
Where as Cabelas is pretty much no questions asked.

Just curious about Midway's returns.
Thanks Doc

Doc O   Ive never had any problems returning to either co,tho Ive never bought a gun from Midway. That said my Midway tumbler is close to twenty years old, they have repaired it twice, only charge to me was for shipping, hard to complain about that kind of service,JMO. Ive got two Pietta 51 Navys, one from 1995 and one from2004,both are fine guns. The 95 gun needed some barrel lug to arbor fit work, the 04 needed minor bolt stoning to perfectly fit the cylinder notches, I also have a Uberti  that needed as much work.I tend to perfer the Pietta,Pettifogger did a excelent article in the Chronicle on tuning the Pietta , See Here   http://www.theopenrange.net/forum/index.php?topic=5659.0     Adios  Sgt.Jake

I've got 2nd Gen Colt (1980), Uberti (2007) & Pietta (2004) '61 Navies.  The Colt's have the best fit, finish, and action, the Pietta has a higher polish and deeper case colors, and the Uberti the most accurate.  They are all high quality guns that I'd have a hard time choosing between if I could only have one pair.  I prefer the Colt/Uberti grip over the Pietta trumpet shape though.

P.S.  Midway has as good a return policy as Cabelas; but, I think their shipping charges are high.

Thanks Guys.
I think I'll go with the Uberti from Midway, although they have only one and will have to waite for back order for the second one or buy another some where else.
I guess I'm being a little nit picky but from what I've read the '61s should have a 7 1/2" barrel and the Cabelas Pietta has a 8".[I guess a 1/2" shouldn't make a difference]
Please correct me if i'm wrong.
I do want 2 of the same brand, that way I'll only need one jig when I go to convert.
Thanks again Doc

Great thread Jake I'll hange on to them.

Try Buffalo Arms. The prices are better and you will actually be getting a Cimarron Uberti.

I have a '61 Navy by Pietta that i got from Cabelas. This is just my opinion but i can tell the difference between the 8" barrel and the correct 7 1/2". The reason the Pietta has an 8" barrel is because they use the same barrel that they use to make the 1860 Army. So my guess is they dont cut it shorter to save a little time and cost. The '60 Army will still balance better because of the longer grip and the .44 caliber(bigger hole bored through the barrel so less metal). However the '61 Navy is in .36 so it has more metal in the barrel and the shorter Navy grip. I love my Pietta Navy but i wish it had the correct 7 1/2 barrel. Id have someone shorten it for me if i knew anyone who did that sort of work.

Hope this helps,
Jacob

Just get your Cimarron/Uberti from direct from Cimarron. You will save a few bucks over BA's prices.

Or order your revolver from Taylors Arms Co. ... best 'stand by you warrenty' folks in the WORLD... I wont' buy cowboy guns from anyone else now.

The prices at Buffalo Arms is far better than at Cimarron or Taylors

MD,
JRW is right unless you know something we don't.  Cimarron and Taylors won't sell inexpensively to keep form undercutting their dealers.  Is there a back door we don't know about?

Yes, there is a way to trim heaps off Taylors or Cimarrons. I assumed no one thought the 'retail listing' of either Cimarron or Taylors was what you REALLY had to pay.

It's called dealers price.

If you do not have a dealers license,,get A DEALER to quote you a price,,and tell him you KNOW he's being quoted a HELL'VA lot less than the retail listing. Even on the blackpowder guns too ya'll. If you have a dealer that will quote you the truth about his proce from Taylors or Cimarron, you'll be pleasently surprised.  And no, BA's can't beat Cimarron or Taylors.

So in other words there is no back door.  You can choose to go around your stocking retailer that is having a hard time making ends meet or find a dealer that is deperate enough to order you one to make 25 bucks.

You keep going around brick and mortar retailers, you will put them out of business and we won't have anyone to buy from, distributors won't have anyone to stock for them and the firearms industry will continue to shrink.  Individuals with licenses are having their licenses pulled or not renewed yearly.  Cities are clamping down on non-retail dealers.  Something to think about...

Hey, it's your money....be the steward of it  YOU wish to be.  Doesn't bother me a bit if you don't support small retailers,,,,but I will.

I'll try to make this quick cuz I'm late heading out of town.  BA's price on a civilian '61 is $264.  Cimarron's level 1 dealer price is $246.  BA buys large quantity of guns so they get better dealer prices and are able to sell at a lower cost than many.  Same way with Ultona and some others.

So yeah, if you can find a dealer willing to order it for you and make less than $18 on the deal, you can save a couple bucks over ordering it from BA.

BTW, BA lists just about everything on their website that Cimarron carries.  Doesn't mean they have it in stock.  But they can get it from Cimarron, 5 of those in stock at the moment.

I don't know what Taylor's dealer price is, could be lower than Cimarron's, but it would be a generic Uberti, which is essentially the same gun but usually has more proof marks showing on cylinder and/or barrel.
