Who offers the  best quality and value on an American made Spencer 6 holer Blakeslee ctg box.  Red Leg

Red Leg: None of the ones I have seen are cheap. The one S&S sells is well designed but made of poorly tanned "painted" foreign leather (India/Pakistan...) sewed together with weak looking thread similiar to what shirts are made with. It is not the fault of S&S, as they are selling import goods to supply a demand as cheaply as possible. I took one of their boxes and gave it to Tommy Johnson at the Cavalry Shop to copy using the brass hardware off the old box to put on the new box. Tommy's leather work is excellent! I was very pleased with the result! I use mine heavily in practice and in N-SSA breechloading rifle matches against the more popular Henry rifle. The high cost of the box is probably due in part to the 6 holed wooden insert which holds the loading tubes.        Hoot

I have been using a Taylor box for about six years of mounted reenacting. It has survived very well and I expect to get a few more out of it.
