SAA Clone Refinishing

I have a Uberti clone (EMF) for about 15 years and have recently decided to put some work in it.  I never cared for the faux case colored frame and wanted a conventional blued finish.  After disassembling the piece I discovered that the GF/BS was alum alloy so I expect that I will get steel replacements from VTI (blued or unfinished).  That's the first question, "Is VTI the best supplier for such parts or should I look elsewhere?"

I brought the stripped barreled action to my local 'smith for a polish/reblue and he expressed concern.  He told me that the frame may be cast iron.  If that is the case then conventional bluing will not take well.  He said that if it does take at all it may appear more purple then blue.  If I can't blue then I may go the "antique" look.  This leads to my second question, "Does anyone know if my frame is steel or a non-blueable material?"

Last question, "What's my alternatives?  Duracoat, Gunkote, hard chrome, etc.?"

Any input will be greatly appreciated.

TIA,
Mike

You can plate just about anything, so see if you can locate someone who can produce an 'Antique Nickel' finish.

It'll at least have more of the 'right' look than the finishes you mention.

Good Luck.

yes, it is stamped on the underside of the barrel.  I am also looking at the various Brownell spray on baked finishes.

Here is an EMF (Jager) pistol I got about 1980. it was one of their finish it yer self kits. At the time it had brass bs/tg, I recently switched it out. But I finished it my self to look old. I basicly used BC cold blue and then let it wear over the years in the wear spots.

The second picture is my gun on top of a picture of Doc Holidays Colt. The picture doesn't do it justice, but the finish is identical right down to the wear on the cylinders...I thought that was cool.

In the 80's EMF got their guns from Jager.

That would be the R.L. Wilson book 'The Peacemakers', page 160.  One of my favorite reference books.
