I have a couple hundred .44cal bullets lubed with that smokeless lube,,,is there any way to shoot'em up with black powder ? Lube the end of the bullet like on a percussion ? do nothing and just shoot'em ? Do not shoot'em ?

Hate to waste these bullets and I'm not wanting to load any more smokeless rounds.

Thanks guys

I have had the same problem in the past. Here's what I did.

Stand bullets on base on a couple of sheets of paper towel covering a cookie sheet. Place in preheated oven at about 200 degrees thill the smokeless lube is melted off. Allow to cool.
While cooling go to theopenrange.net The Dark Siders forum  Dark Siders Reference Library to Pan Lube 101. This will give complete instruction on pan lubing your bullet.

Worked good for me   GOOD LUCK.

Easier still sell the smokeless bullets to a pard and order big lube bullets from Springfield Slim ;D ;D

I've shot several hundred 250 grain lead flat point bulliets that I got on a deal at a gun store. They all were made by a local fella and had the smokeless lube in the lube ring. I loaded them in my .45 shells with 30 or 35 grains of 3G and shot them with no problem. In fact, I still have some left. I really have seen no  lead build up or anything, and accuracy was fine. These were shot out of a 5 1/2" EMF New DaKota (older ASM).

Marshall,
hardcast smokeless bullets are all I have ever shot out of my pistols.  Because I don't cast and they are cheaper than "BP bullets".

I melt out the hard lube by laying them on their sides on a section of newspaper (works much better than setting them on their base - the lube wicks into the paper).  Put them in the oven at around 250 degrees, only takes about 5 minutes.  Don't wander off and leave them in too long, the lube will start smoking and stink up the kitchen.  By the way, those wax soaked newspaper sheets make great fire starters in the fireplace  :)

Then I just load 'em up with BP, no lube at all.  After loading at the loading table, I squirt a blob of butter flavored Crisco over the first two rounds to be shot.  They run great all day, and clean up easy.  Accurate and no leading.  I've never had a problem with the Crisco running out and making a mess, even on hot Texas afternoons.  In the winter I sometimes use Bore Butter instead.

If I was going to shoot them in the rifle, I would pan lube them, but lubing the pistol rounds just before shooting is easy as pie.

I'm with the crowd on this one.

I shoot thousands of smokeless lube bullets in .45 Colt. I never had any issues other than the cleaning of my rifle. The lube would build up in the barrel and make it harder to clean.

Now, I'm shooting BP lubed bullets from Springfield Slim and the clean-up is easier.

Use APP or Pinnacle instead of BP and use the bullets as lubed. When you run out of the smokeless lubed bullets, switch to BP and BP lubed bullets.

+1.  You can use T7 also.  IMHO this is a better (read easier) solution than going the pan lube route.

You did better than I. When I went to 44-40 I did not have any suitable black powder bullets. I used BP lube on some cast smokeless style bullets. The lube ran out at about 18" of barrel. I had to scrub and scrape until I got my MAV Dutchman 44 Big Lube mold. Problem solved.
If I wanted to shoot smokeless bullets in my rifle I would load with 777 and never look back.

Yea, like I said, I had to clean out my rifle barrel. But, the "smokeless" bullets (Oregon Laser Cast) shot fine and the barrel wasn't that hard to clean. I don't shoot 777, to me, it's just a smokless powder that smokes alot. If I were shooting a sub, it would be Pyrodex or APP.

Or, you can put 'em in yer casting pot and pour them into a mold that makes genuine black powder bullets.  They recycle well that way.

Or load em' with TB and shoot em' up. That is what I did then bought a mold and cast my own and lubed with homemade BP lube.

Any reason why you cant just leave the smokeless lube intact and just Crisco the first two rounds?

I have heard of that being done and it would probably work okay since that hard lube mostly stays in the lube groove anyway.  I just melt it out because it is easy to do.

Again, I've put thousands of rounds of "Smokeless" bullets through my 5.5" .45's using Goex BP. Never had a problem. I did try putting BoreButter in the cylinder for a short time, but, it never made a diffrence.

The rifle (Rossi '94) is a little bit diffrent, as you have to clean it more and it's a little toughter to clean out. But, it's not tha big a deal. The rifle takes more cleaning with BP anyway.

Shoot 'em up. If you really don't want to; send them to me and I'll get rid of them for you!  ;D

Howdy All,

I like the idea of lubing the front of the cylinder!  What I do is a real PITA and probably not real effective.  I place an overshot card made from punched milk cartons over the powder.  Then a 1/8"- 1/4" square dollop of SPG on top, then seat the bullet.  For me loading is therapy, so the extra effort is OK.  I usually end up with a nice lube star on my barrel end, so it does work.  I will have to figure a way to dispense Crisco or Bore Butter in a less modern fashion.

Thanks,

PhP

Roosterman

I lube with crisco over the front of the cylinder just like my C&B revolvers. I don't bother to met out the modern lube, just leave it there.
