Anyone have a "floating firing pin" Uberti SAA replica?

So I went to the range this morning. 44 Special handloads were accurate but the 2400 powder was messy. Lots of unburned flakes. I will have to use AA#5 or some other powder from now on.

Uberti made the change to the retractable firing pin around 2016 so the GCA 1968 was not a factor - 1968 is many years removed from 2016. Fortunately Gun Parts Corp. (Numrich) makes reproductions so we can go back to the way Uberti built revolvers in the "old" days.

I don't know if GCA was a factor, but by changing to the retractable FP they were able to eliminate the 2-position base pin and go back to the standard pin.  Taylors has had the parts available for quite some time, quite a bit less than VTI, not sure how they did that, but hammers are $100 and trigger $20.  I have bought two of them, just to have on hand in case I run into some 3-clickers that I want.

BTW, Cimarron's Old Model (BP frame) Model P's are STILL 4-click, and their Arizona Ranger (replacement for the Evil Roy) competition guns are pre-war frame but are also 4-click.

p.s. Royce, I could tell it was an older pic because of the trigger being further forward  :)

Interesting,  how so? Otherwise,  it would have been a  "4 clicker" to begin with.

The Pietta revolvers are still four click - they get away with that by telling users to only load five cartridges and let the hammer rest on an empty chamber as the Colt does. Uberti could do the same thing if they wanted to.

I checked the other sources and did not find any stock - I was buying the wide hammer, the wide trigger, and the cylinder. GP / Numrich had the hammer and the cylinder in stock - it took maybe a year for the trigger to show up. I was not dissatisfied with the prices.

Ah yes, didn't realize you got the wider hammer, that definitely is harder to find new in a 4-clicker.

The parts are a little different for a flat top. The regular ones fit and work but look silly.

I don't have a Pietta so I could easily be wrong, but I thought they got away with it by using the two-position cylinder pin.  And last I heard, Uberti was still using the old system for their so-called black powder framed guns.

Only on the Cimarron-imported Ubertis.  Both BP-frame and pre-war frame from other importers are 3-click and have the 1-position base pin.

Well that does not make sense since I got this revolver from Cimarron and it is the black powder version. So far as I know Cimarron sells four click Pietta revolvers. All the Uberti revolvers are three click including the way mine was before I modified it. I have not seen and know nothing about the Pietta revolvers.

Maybe Cimarron eventually switched (had to switch?) to 3-click systems for black powder frames too.

No. All their (Cimarron's) BP framed regular Model P's are still 4-click, as well as the Arizona Ranger in the pre-war frame, as mentioned before.   Royce, I don't really know, I can only guess that yours, with BP frame, had the 3-click because it was a flat top target versus a standard Model P. Hard to say.  And besides that, Uberti DOES make mistakes - I saw a fair number of them when I worked at CFA.

I have two of the Cattleman revolvers one I bought a couple of years ago which is the latest version, another I got off the SASS wire for a very good price.  Initially I thought I might have trouble with the older gun (slots in hammer you can see the rod that pushes firing pin fwd) because it was much easier to cock than the new one.  Was worried about lighter springs not setting off primers.  That was not the case it has always functioned flawlessly with CCI, Winchester and Remington Primers.

The new gun was entirely different.  Went to a match Boom Click Click Click Click on 2 stages.  Was going to send it back to Taylors for warranty work.  I thought what the heck why don't really clean out everything I can on the hammer and firing pin with carb cleaner and lube the heck out of it.  That worked hundreds of rounds later not a failure to fire.

Interesting aside note, I recently got a pair of Taurus Deputies, they have a Ruger like transfer bar system but still use a 4 click safety notch hammer.

I bought one of those Uberti Flat Tops in 44 WCF from Dixie Gun Works a few years ago. I bought and fitted a .44 Special cylinder to it, and also bought everything to convert it to 4-click. Replaced the bolt trigger spring, cut the forcing cone to 11° and started shooting. That thing was SMOKING accurate! I'm talking palm-size groups at 75 yds. when fired from a seated/back-rested position.
I never changed the internals to 4-click because the darn thing had such a good trigger pull and shot so well. I also never had a seconds trouble with the floating firing pin. On a side note, I expect most trouble with this system is from shooters getting off the trigger too soon. Good follow through would probably eliminate most problems with said system.
Anyhow, I sold the ol' Flat Top because its 7 1/2" barrel was just too much to carry when hunting, and that was the reason I bought the revolver.
As for your load of 2400, it sounds like you're either using too light of a load, not applying a heavy enough crimp, or both. 2400 works great in the .44 Special with heavier loads, but honestly, I just used Uniquein the .44 Special, even for my hunting loads. I don't recall the exact charge of Unique, but I was running a cast 240 gr. SWCHP just over 1100 fps in my Flat Top. I only shot one buck with it, and he died quickly without a single complaint.
