Model 92 jamming problems

Hi Folks,

I've got an Armi Sport repro Model 92 Winchester in 44-40. I haven't shot it very much, I did use it in two club matches with mixed results. It's as accurate as I could hope for (maybe MORE!) but the FIRST round out of the magazine will sometimes turn as though it was backing out of the loading gate. Other times the round will come up but bullet pointed down and I have to jack the lever again to get the round to chamber. After the first round it runs fine. I thought it may be because the rifle wasn't broken in yet, but after shooting 150 rounds in practice last weekend, I get the same thing. It doesn't matter how man rounds are in the magazine.  I had a link to a fellow who does action jobs on these, but have managed to lose it.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Is the OAL of the rounds right on spec?  The 92 is picky about that.

The thing I learned about 92's is you don't baby them.  work the lever with "athority"  aften wit that first stroke we go slower. I find myself doing it.  Also the 92 does have a longer lever tgravel than the marlins and some others.
There could be whole range of other problems but with a fairly new gun (less that 1000-2000 rounds through it) it might just take some"working of the lever to make things runfthey way they should.   After 6-8 thousandrounds  through  my Rossi 92 it si starting to smoothout sum but I still don't baby it.

Thanks for the responses and links. I'll double check the OAL. But I'm pretty sure they're seated to the correct depth.

Since it is only the first round, (which was also the last one loaded), I can pretty well guess what the problem is.  I had one that did the same thing.  All it takes to correct it is to push the last round loaded in so that it lines up straight with the carrier.  If you don't do that, it will be crooked on the carrier and will not come up properly.
The easiest way to check is to open the action slowly, and observe the round on the carrier.  If it is not pushed in enough to clear the gate, it will be laying on the carrier with the bullet nose towards the left side of the action.

Well I checked the OAL on the cases. It's within tolerances. Not the problem. I fired 150 rounds last weekend with the same results.

French Jack, that is exactly what its doing. What was your fix?

Thanks to ALL!

The fix is easy-- when you load the last round through the gate, use your finger to push the cartridge a bit forward.  When you release it, it should move back into the carrier a bit, and will be straight with the magazine.  Try it a few times and you will get the hang of it.

As French Jack said: for my AS converted to .44 Colt I use a S&W alum cleaning rod to push the last round forward. Works for me.

  Howdy Gents,

I use a push stick for the last round in, this will allow you to push the bullet far enough in that there shouldn't be any problem, I carry it in my gun belt along with my bullets, here is one I made for a friend.

Thanks Fellas!

I'll try a push stick. My fingers just won't shove it in far enough to make a difference. I tried!

Again, my Thanks!
