Wanted to double check the title of a book before I go to order it.
I believe the name of the book is "Guns of the New West".

It's supposed to have pictures of old west gunleather plus several good pictures of the gunleather used by Wayne, Rogers, The Lone Ranger, and other TV Western stars.

I spotted it at Borders a while back, but it was gone before I could get it.

Anyone out there that can help?

This is what you mean I think.  I have the book.  It is a bit dated at this point.  Pictures are black and white and the book focuses on reproductions of firearms for CAS.   I dont recall  there being much in the way of gunleather in the book,  but I havent looked at it for some time.  Packing Iron is still the best book for gun leather.  The book you are looking for might actually be something different.

I will check my library tonight for others you might find more useful.

"Peacemakers" by R. L. Wilson is another book that has a nice of pics of gunleather including a bunch of Hollywood gear.

Along with "Packing Iron" I recommend its companion book by the same publisher "Cowboys and the Trappings of the Old West"

There's a few other books out there as well (search for books on cowboy collectibles for instance), but over all they are just a the tip of the iceberg. I've been lucky enough to view several thousand pieces over the years in both museums as well as private collections, most of which unfortunately has never and probably never will be presented to the public at large. :-[

That Peacemakers book is great! My brother gave it to me last year.

Wolfwalker,

I also have this book..it is written by David R. Chicoine.  It is a paper back and is available through Gun Digest Books.  As previously quoted, the photos are in black and white but are still great pictures.  Most of the leather work was done by James Allen out of Heflin, AL.

The Peace Makers and thew Cowboy Trappings books are great research books
