Checkering on a rifle stock.. when?

Just wondering if anyone has any dates for checkering, factory or otherwise.  Patterns would be nice as well.

Checkering was very rare, most often on things like Winchester 1 of 1000's or factory customs.  I think you might be better at this than me, but do a search on the guns of Theadore Roosevelt, his guns were mostly custom and the ones I've seen pictures of were checkered.  In fact I read somewhere that the folks at the Winchester Factory Custom Shop thought he was a regular pain in the arse.  Most patterns were pretty simple that I have seen and often the guns were engraved.

Howdy Big Hext - to answer the question checkering goes back to the 17th century - was first used on mathclocks. English sporting rifles and pistols of the 18th and 19th century often sported it. Their is one major differnce though - rather than being pointed up like modern day it was left flat topped.

Take a look at the book "Peacemakers" by RW WIlson - several period firearms with checkering including TR's model 1876 Winchesters, the guns of Granville Stuart, and other. The Freund Bros often used checkering on their upgraded Sharps rifles.

Thanks for the offer.. What about a modern gun with similar checkering?  By description, the deluxe Weatherby might be similar.  I'm especially interested in feeling and inspecting the design.
